When he first started doing CFB after NASCAR was nixed, I actually liked him. But now that he's getting more air time, man that dude is annoying. Really plays up the "Good 'ol Southern Baw" shtick. Like really chill. You're not funny, it's corny as hell.

ESPN is also trying to turn him into the redneck Tom Rinaldi sometimes too. They put him on the "tear at your heart strings....or else!" stories now too.

He's on WJOX in Birmingham a lot. Shows a ton of passion for basically anything he covers. Guy just loves sports.

Exactly. So many sports talking heads nowadays have such a sense of self-importance/gravitas about them. Because they feel they have to deliver serious news/social commentary.

Don't get me wrong from my comments above...I don't mind Marty Smith at all. But it does feel like ESPN is trying to push him more and more. And I agree that he seems to enjoy what he does and (at least seems to) comes off as a fairly genuine dude.

I don't hate the guy, like I said I really enjoy him, I guess it's him trying to be lighthearted or ESPN pushing him to accentuate the Southern character. I'm just not felling it at the moment I guess you can say.
I will say he does a good job of getting the people he's interviewing to loosen their guards. Not many can do that these days so I guess it's working?
