A majority of Pennsylvania residents surveyed support a statue of Joe Paterno returning to a place of prominence on Penn State's campus, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released on Wednesday.

Nearly 60% of residents polled are in favor of placing a statue of Paterno on campus, according to the poll, while 25% of responders are against a memorial honoring the former football coach, who was fired in November 2011 after allegations of sexual abuse against former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky first surfaced.

quote:

Penn State Alumni Association executive director Roger Williams, speaking to USA TODAY Sports last week about the Paterno statue, said, "Coach Paterno had iconic status across the country. I certainly hope we're at the beginning of a process that will see his rightful place in the pantheon of college sports be reclaimed over the next several years."

Is this true?

quote:

Despite the nature of the 2001 incident that McQueary told Paterno he witnessed in the showers, Paterno did not notify state police. While the prosecutors did not accuse Paterno of any wrongdoing, he was criticized for his failure to follow up on McQueary's report. The victim in the 2001 incident was identified in July 2012. Sandusky continued to have access to the university's athletic facilities until his arrest in November 2011.

That's what I thought. And isn't campus police an extension of state police?

Joe Paterno told his AD and requested/had a meeting with Senior vice president Gary Schultz, who over saw campus police. Mike McQueary and Paterno met with both men.

quote:

Senior vice president Gary Schultz and Athletic Director Tim Curley were found to be not credible by the grand jury. The two administrators were charged with grand jury perjury and failure to report suspected child abuse. The indictment accused Curley and Schultz of not only failing to tell the police, but falsely telling the grand jury that Mike McQueary never informed them of sexual activity.

This. Not Joe's job to solve crimes, he's a football coach and Sandusky wasn't on staff in 2001.

I'm sure he had no control over:

Here's what smells in this whole situation. Sandusky was the head coach in waiting at Penn State. Then suddenly not only was he not the head coach in waiting but he suddenly "retired" in 1999 at the age of 55. This was only a year or two after he was named coach in waiting. Why the sudden change Penn State?

In late 1998 Sandusky was investigated by the district attorney for sexual abuse. The DA decline to press charges, at that point he either was forced to retire or did so voluntary.

The big question is what happened to that DA?

quote:

It's been nine years since Centre County District Attorney Ray Gricar disappeared and authorities still seem to have more questions than answers.
Was it suicide? Murder? Or did he simply walk away from his life? While a court declared Gricar dead in 2011 -- despite the absence of a body -- authorities still cannot say what happened to him.
In 2005, 60-year-old Gricar disappeared after leaving his home to go for a drive. Later, authorities located his vehicle parked outside of an antique mall in Lewisburg, a place he frequently visited. Police also retrieved his laptop and hard drive from the Susquehanna River.
Many theories have developed over the years concerning Gricar's disappearance. For example, some wonder if it is connected to Gricar's decision not to file criminal charges against former Penn State football coach Jerry Sandusky.
In 1998, Sandusky abused a boy who later became known as Victim 6 in the locker room shower after an afternoon of working out at Penn State's football facility. The boy's mother was alarmed by her son's wet hair when he arrived home, found out about the shower, and alerted authorities.
The boy's mother later confronted Sandusky in her home while police were listening in on the conversation. Sandusky told the mother of Victim 6 that he 'wished he was dead' and knew he wouldn't be granted her forgiveness. Ultimately, Gricar never filed charges against Sandusky.
It wasn't until years later, after new allegations, that Sandusky was arrested and convicted on child sex abuse charges.

Joe Pa is guilty of a coverup he knew everything, if someone thinks the head coach does not know every thing that goes on he/she is badly mistaken.

His Legacy should be ruined

Thanks for sharing. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania does indeed have its fair share of rednecks, many of whom have a telephone and are willing to respond to surveys. Where Pennsylvania differs from respectable states, such as Alabama and Louisiana, is we do not have as many upstanding citizens, willing to take a hard stance against social issues. I applaud the opinions of those in this thread, and look forward to more of the same.

If they put it back up it's only a matter of time before someone defaces it or destroys it.

Sandusky had been given an award as a top assistant in the country (Broyles?) and didn't even get a sniff as a head coach after he left Penn State? bullshite. People, most especially JoePa, knew all about that child rapist. Why do you think JoePa went to university officials and not the police? No one - NO ONE - had as much pull as Paternoster on that campus. How do you think that notification by JoePa went?

"ummmm, guys, Sandusky is at it again. This could get really ugly for all of us. I'll get Gerry to quietly retire if you get this whole mess to go away."
