Bruce Bochy states that they won't let him, but as a fan I would be all for it. I wouldn't expect him to win the derby, but it would be cool to see him beat someone.

Sure, hell it's probably less harmful for him than normal hitters who mess up their swing trying to win.

He was hitting balls to the upper deck in BP yesterday.

During batting practice Sunday, Bumgarner sent more than a dozen balls over the fence in left field. Two balls reached the third deck, above the "Big Mac Land" sign. His final cut reached the fourth deck, a feat rarely accomplished at Busch Stadium.

All I really want to see is Stanton taking it seriously and trying to hit one 550+.

Buster Olney said he asked a groundskeeper if he's ever seen anyone else hit a HR up there and he said the only other player he's seen do it is Nelson Cruz.

Yeah Stanton, Rizzo, Bryant.... shite there is a ton of people I would like to see in it.

Brings me back to days of Griffey and Bonds doing the HR derby.

That 93 home derby... Griffey, Fielder, Belle, J. Gonzales, Bonds, Bonilla, Justice, Piazza....

why would they let him hit batting practice and hit 12 out of the stadium but not hit in the homerun derby?

I'd be like I'm participating... what are you going to do about it, Bruce?

I always wished they would do a pitcher's HR Derby on All Star weekend, I think it would be hilarious and very entertaining if you could get people to participate.

They need to add some bonus for distance.

hell yea. Let him do it. It's all for fun and entertainment anyways.

They should let some random fans do it too. It'd be embarrassing for the fan, but raise some money for a good charity and get some cool press.

This is not going away. He really wants to do it.

They would undoubtedly prefer their valuable left-hander take it easy and not take any unnecessary risks by swinging for the fences with his adrenaline pumping in front of a hyped audience, but Bumgarner is not fazed by those risks. In fact, he's already countered the injury argument by noting that the Giants were willing to put him on a horse during last season's opening day ceremonies, and that swinging a bat is a far less risky proposition.

quote:

Bochy said Tuesday that he planned to talk with Giants vice president of baseball operations Brian Sabean and general manager Bobby Evans soon to discuss the organization's position on Bumgarner's Derby aspirations. "Your initial feelings are to keep him out of it because I know how competitive he is and how hard he'll swing, but at the same time I think it'll create interest with fans getting to watch one of the best pitchers in the game swing the bat," Bochy told reporters.
