Carlos Zambrano hit 6 in 2006 and had 24 for his career.

Some southpaw from almost 100 years ago hit over 700 HR's.

7 in 2001. 7 in 79 ABs. Batted .291, slugged .582, and had an OPS of .891.

Don Drysdale was paid 50K for pitching and 10K for pinch-hitting in the early 60s.

If Hampton's pace is extrapolated to the 572 ABs Chipper Jones had in 2001, he would have hit 50 HRs.

Fify

Owings 2007 season might be the best a pitcher ever had at the plate

i guess if baseball started in 2000 or you've never heard of Babe Ruth.

Obviously we're not counting Babe Ruth, he was in the lineup as an outfielder when he hit 99% of his Homeruns. So that really doesn't count

IIRC, he had the second most home runs per AB behind Barry Bonds one season.

Dontrelle had an OPS over .850 in 2007. Not too bad.

Honorable mention to Hall of Famer Walter Johnson, who ranks 17th on this list but had what is generally acknowledged to be the greatest single hitting season ever by a pitcher. In 1925 -- at age 37, no less -- he hit .433/.455/.577 in 107 PA with two HR and 20 RBI. In addition to being a great hitting year "for a pitcher", the .433 batting average is the highest in MLB history for anyone who had at least 107 PA in a season.

This would be a good thread to ask this question in: I've been wondering this since the cards had a series with the Giants earlier this week and Bum pinch hit twice, is he really better than the Giants bench bats? He may be, idk I don't follow the Giants tbat closely, but our announcers acted pretty surprised by it.

I would find it hard to believe he the best choice outta their whole bench (one game was a tie game in like the 6th, so they had plenty of bats left) but I hope he is just bc I like it when weird things happen and that would be badass for a pitcher to be that good from the plate

FTR, he got a basehit and IIRC a RBI

Bumgarner didn't used to have a good bat. But he hit .258 last year with 4 dingers, and he's at .255 this year with 5 dingers. Dude is not a liability at all at the plate.
