Looking back, was Sebastian Janikowski worth being a 1st Round pick?

He was good but he wasn't that good.

If you can project a kicker to be that good, for that long, honestly it's still probably not worth it.

ETA: Not project, but absolutely know for certain. Still not worth it.

I guess you'd have to define what criteria you are using.

From a purely Raiders perspective, this was a home run. on average though, prob not a great pick.

How? Besides a fan favorite what did he bring? They could've pieced together a solid kicking game for 17 years. His FG% is pretty low for his career, although it is thrown off from them putting him out to miss absurdly long attempts.

FG kickers are highly underated. He was definitely worth the pick for the number of quality years they got out of him.

A good kicker is worth even more now that extra points arent a gimme.

I'd argue versus other players drafted below him that he was worth it.. he played a skill position at a high level for 15 years while boasting an over 90% accuracy rate, the biggest leg in the game all while booming kicks out of the end zone.

His career average is 80.3%. Good for 42nd all time.

Like another poster said, you could have pieced together an equivalent kicking game.

Imagine if the Raiders had Chad Pennington to take over as starting QB after Gannon got old instead of Rick Mirer, Kerry Collins, JaMarcus Russell, etc... They would have been so much better off.

His 17 years-ago range was elite. Of all of Al's first-round reaches, the Polish Rocket has represented well.

That range is commonplace now, especially considering his undrafted, free-agent backup drilled two 50+ FG's and went 4/4 beating TN last Sunday.

Seems like kickers have progressed over the years. Most everyone is a good kicker these days.

i guess so with building new retractable roof stadiums and putting in field turf... does anyone still play on a possible mud surface?

Bullshite.

That fat frick carried the Raiders for many years when the offense sucked so bad they couldn't get past the 30 yard line.

Only people who look at stats - say, ah man, he didn't have the perfect FG % like my favorite Dome team kicker.

Raiders used and abused Seabass stats-wise to you nerds.

They tried FGs for him half the time that most kickers wouldn't try 1/10th of the time.

And he kicked in that shite-hole on dirt baseball stadium.

But for about 5 years, he was their only fricking offense. His stats will never say he's an all-time great, but he was.

Seabass holds the record for most FGs over 50 yards.

Dude wasn't just another kicker...he had the leg the Raiders needed during their dismal period - and he was worth the pick as their only way of generating long-distance points.

He's an all time great and is a first ballot hall of famer. Being consistently good for all those years is incredible.

But they could have gone the usual route for kickers and achieved the same kicking percentage. They just used one man for 17 years instead of 10.

Yes, he went 17th overall in 2000's draft. He had a better career than 11 of the next 12 players that were drafted.

Chad Pennington, Shaun Alexander, Stockar McDougle, Sylvester Morris, Chris McIntosh, Rashard Anderson, Ahmed Plummer, Chris Hovan, Erik Flowers, Anthony Becht, Rob Morris, R. Jay Soward.

it would be today, then it was not, it was a reasonable choice, times and circumstances
