No you havent. Youve seen some balls that were screamers like 200 ft prior to entering the stands near the foul poles.

Is this 200 ft short of the foul pole? This happens all the time and the guy hit it opposite field. Take that to the head and it'll do some damage.

Quite obvious I was talking nets not working for the viewing experience the farther from home plate you get and having to look through it at an angle.

Not sure why you would post a gif of a ball being stopped by a net. Literally had nothing to do with my post.

This is actually a good point. Perhaps they could make them out of kevlar or some really thin really strong material that doesn't obscure the view as much.

And I was posting a gif of someone being hit by a ball through the net. But somehow, I'm the idiot.

Literally wasn't the point. Just a good quote to accompany a freak occurrence.

Idiot.

My cousin works for the Houston Astros. They studied netting about 9 years ago. A 5 year old took a ball in the face during batting practice when the Cardinals were in town. They looked at trying to protect fans better. Also looked at different types of netting and configurations. Even looked at running some netting straight toward the field so a screamer would hit the netting directly on. All of the netting ideas had some pretty big drawbacks for viewing from the box seats. Really was no good solution.

Astros are only one of numerous teams that have looked at trying to make it safer. They all know a screaming foul ball is very dangerous. MLB has known this for a long time. There is a reason there is a legal disclaimer on the every ticket sold in MLB.

Almost comical too hear someone say just run a net down a few hundred feet and the problem is solved. Really? Yes, MLB never considered that. Good lord.

Your idea about Kevlar or some other thinner material probably has a lot of merit. I bet they are looking at other materials as well as other solutions. When you need a physical barrier it is difficult.

Let's be honest here fellas: the MLB currently doesn't expressly mandate netting beyond home plate to the foul poles and it's unlikely there will be much incentive on the part of cheap, conservative owners to institute such drastic changes because a minute few spectators are inflicted by such events and such change would elevate costs. The current format is how baseball has been appreciated for over 100 years and owners are more inclined with the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." I'm of the persuasion that it's almost the equivalent of curing the headache by cutting off the head and overcompensating which might detract from the bottom line and possibly affect fan attendance. Many of the baseball fans are traditionalists and purists and I can all but guarantee they will oppose such a drastic, progressive approach.

Apparently they already have some netting.
How far do you want the netting to extend?

How many tens of thousands of baseball games are played every single year (counting MLB, minor league, college, etc.)

This is a non-issue. Freak accidents happen.

Far, far more people are killed driving to and from the games.

I would never sit in that spot with a child. Hopefully, more parents think of this in the future.

I would say you've gotta at least go to the edge of the infield dirt.

Wrigley nets just go up to the beginning of the dugout.

And Wrigley Field has been around for 70 years and it hasn't been a problem. I blame cell phones and millennials.

Who would pay those gigantic prices to sit at field level just to stare through an annoying net?
