Landry-Walker has suspended the defensive coordinator of its football team and seven players for Friday’s regular-season finale versus Lake Area New Tech due to their participation in a pre-game altercation versus Easton last week, according to the Louisiana High School Athletic Association.

Defensive Coordinator Dennis Christopher has been suspended from practice this week in addition to being prohibited from coaching in the state-ranked Charging Buccaneers’ non-district Homecoming game versus Lake Area by Landry-Walker Principal Mary Laurie, LHSAA Assistant Executive Director Keith Alexander said Wednesday.

Seven players identified as defensive back Jaron George, linebackers De’Vonte Bowie and Curry Benn, defensive linemen Wilner Elise and Allen Boyd and offensive linemen Timothy Washington and Corey Harden were prohibited by Laurie from playing against Lake Area in Landry-Walker's self-imposed sanctions, Alexander said.

Christopher was involved in a heated verbal exchange with an unidentified Easton coach that appeared to initiate the pregame altercation approximately one hour prior to the 7 p.m. kickoff at Behrman Stadium, according to a NOLA.com eyewitness account.

Intervention by New Orleans Police was required once the altercation escalated and players became involved in the standoff.

The seven players identified by Landry-Walker officials are being required by Laurie to attend Saturday school sessions for the rest of the semester and complete an online National Federation of High Schools sportsmanship course before being allowed to play again this season, Alexander said.

Christopher as part of his disciplinary action must complete a separate online NFHS sportsmanship class designed for coaches, Alexander said.

Landry-Walker also has agreed to make financial restitution to Easton for the cost of replacing an Easton jersey belonging to Blue Chip wide receiver Tyron Johnson that was destroyed in the altercation.

That amount is expected to total approximately $654, Easton Principal Alexina Medley said. That amount is more than double the initial $300 agreed upon by the schools.

The situation became heated as Landry-Walker’s players attempted to walk through Easton’s players and resulted in both teams squaring off against one another

Johnson’s jersey was taken when he intervened to protect Easton’s place-kickers during the Landry-Walker walk-through, Easton Coach Tony Hull said.

Police subsequently intervened to defuse the situation and threatened to make arrests if the sides did not back down, according to the NOLA.com eyewitness.

“O. Perry Walker teams have been doing (the Walk the Field) for years dating to when Behrman had a dusty old dirt field. The players would line up in one end zone and walk the length of the field to pick up rocks and any other loose debris they would find and remove them.
