LOL

If there is any player in today's game built for that style, it would be Lebron.

Physically yes, mentally OBVIOUSLY NOT. MJ and Kobe dont let shite like hard fouls get to them. They played the way Lebron did AFTER his retaliation, HARD AS frick. He acted like a bitch and yes 15 years ago he wouldnt be driving the lane uncontested near about as much. It just didnt happen. Big men 10+ years ago took pride in not allowing points in the paint. Nowadays their too worried about getting posterized.

Every player today would have been fine. You adjust to the rules you are given.

By their logic, Oakley never would have made it in today's game, which is just stupid.

No clue how you came to that conclusion, none whatsoever.

OTher than maybe Dwight, Lebron takes more hard hits than anyone in the league, and it's rather OBVIOUS that he is better than anyone in the league at absorbing hits and still making plays.

The other thing that people completely forget about when they think of all those guys and the hard hits back in the day...they would get called for fouls lol. So, I'm not sure how Lebron wouldn't make it back then, when he'd simply foul out guys if they tried to do that multiple times per game. He's obviously proved he can take hits and doesn't miss games as a result.

Lebron doesn't play hard?

So you think Lebron wouldn't have been driving to the rim? I hope you're joking. Those big guys could take all the pride they want, but it wouldn't help them when they have 4 fouls with 10 minutes left in the 2nd quarter.

Exactly.

The other thing no one thinks about is the fact that today's player would also be able to be super physical and mug people without the consequences they have now.

Henry Abbott has a really good article on this today on ESPN:

quote:

This is not about babying James or anybody else. This is about the league encouraging the best possible version of the game, the one that works best for players and fans. Would you rather see James dunk, or get hit in the head? Would you rather see Hinrich meet James in the air, or in a bear hug?

This is ultimately about answering this question: What is basketball, and is tackling part of it?

The walls of my office are covered in hoops books. Some are of the “how to play” variety. I just took a stack of them -- by everyone from Walt Frazier to John Wooden -- over to a comfortable seat and spent an hour reading up on how the experts say good defense ought to be played.

They talk about footwork and brains. They talk about keeping your torso between your man and the basket, staying on the balls of your feet, knees bent, hands up and mind alert. They talk about staying on the ground for fakes and talking to teammates. They also talk about many layers of thought: tracking both the ball and your man, memorizing the tendencies of every player on the court, knowing who likes to go left, who telegraphs passes, who never passes, whom you should never leave open.

I'm sorry, but thats just crap. If he thinks those were hard fouls... He runs over players, and gets away with a bunch of contact because hes the best player in the game. Needs to suck it up, especially given that today's NBA isn't anywhere near as physical as the play back in the 90's...

I agree with ALL this..............

The real issue is people don't really remember games from 20+ years ago. They remember a few plays, but that's about it. Here's a flagrant on Jordan by the Pistons in 1993. LeBron has that happen to him a lot generally with no flagrant attached. In fact, that foul was far less dangerous than what Taj did last night.

Here's 10 min of Jordan vs Pistons from a 1989 playoff game. How many hard fouls does he even take? 1? Maybe 2?

And LeBron is more upset about the fact that the refs aren't calling the flagrants not about the fact he's getting hit in the face repeatedly

They see the videos from the Bad Boy Pistons and since it's been 20 years, they think they were dishing out those types of fouls every trip down the court.

That stuff rarely happened.

This thread is beyond comical and hypocritical. Everyone who doesn't like LeBron or the Heat get giddy when teams get physical, play dirty, and bully Lebron like Indiana tried in the playoffs last year.

You have to make a basketball play on the ball or a flagrant 1 or 2 is supposed to be called. A couple times Lebron drove to the hole and got wrapped up or even tackled. He deserved to get a flagrant foul on the shoulder to Boozer, because it was an intential shoulder, but the Bulls should have had at least 2 flagrant fouls called on them.

The one thing that is fact when comparing eras is players these days are more athletically inclined than players in prior eras. To say a freak athlete that dominates the league in 2013 wouldn't be able to play in a previous era is absolutely idiotic and you probably shouldn't post on that topic anymore.

I think he's upset about the inequity between what he's allowed to do and what others are allowed to do to him. Or at least his perception of it. He committed a hard, non-dangerous foul and was called for a flagrant after Taj committed a hard, dangerous foul and wasn't. But this isn't the first time this season LeBron has talked out about this. LeBron gets hit in the head more than any other player I can ever remember. It's really odd.

You couldn't touch Jordan in his prime, but don't tell Dukke V (or whatever his name is) that.

I think we can safely say those same guys ranting about Lebron would be applauding Boozer if the situation was reversed. If Lebron swiped at Boozer's head and got a personal foul only, then Boozer gave Lebron a hard elbow to the chest, those same guys would be so giddy and excited about it, it's just silly.
