I've always wondered what would happen if a team or two decided to leave the NCAA and form their own collegiate athletics governing body, or if a team just decided not to accept any penalties inflicted by the NCAA.

Could it happen? What would be the legal ramifications? I'm no lawyer, but I just think that with how feckless and corrupt the NCAA has gotten to be, something has to give very soon.

It better more along the lines of "a conference or two"

Short answer: The NCAA teams wouldn't be allowed to schedule the defectors so...

think it would look much like the Ivy League's place in FCS... a team might look like the Harvard team that whooped arse a few years ago, and no one would know or take them seriously as they only play among themselves

NAIA is separate from the NCAA and lower level DIV II and DIV III NCAA schools play against them. I think you're right in a sense and wouldn't play each other in football but Baseball, Basketball, Soccer, and other sports they could play each other

I'm pretty sure the games against NAIA teams for those schools aren't recognized by the NCAA as official but are by NAIA but I could be wrong.

edit: I think some DIV I teams play them too

The NCAA dared UNLV to leave during the 90's and UNLV took the punishment and stayed... I think that's the closest any school has come to leaving recently

Just wondering cause I wasn't old enough to remember this and not in a condescending tone, how did they dare them to leave? like what was going on that caused them to want to leave?

If the blue bloods and the the bigger state schools all grouped together and left the NCAA would have trouble. TV contracts are going to follow the blue bloods. The smaller schools would be forced to leave as well because they wouldn't want to lose the gravy train they get from being associated with the blue bloods

If conferences were smart, they would cut their ties. The NCAA is an unnecessary hinderance anymore.

I still believe we eventually get to 4 16 team power conferences. Those four conferences will control ~90% of the revenue and will be able to break away and create their own governing body.

I think it would turn into the wild west if conferences
set scholarship limits, punishments or payments to athletes amd Notre Dame would be free to set up its own rules.
