Is Kansas City, Missouri & Kansas City, Kansas essentially the same city? Located in different states with different mayors, but still the same city?

Two different cities in two different states, and yes, two different mayors. They butt up right next to each other along the state line, so we basically share the same metro area, if that makes any sense.

KCMO is the older of the two, and was actually founded before the state of Kansas was. The name comes from the Kansa indian tribe.

Weren't both cities named several different things before they finally settled on "Kansas City"??

How long of a drive would it take you to get from downtown to the other downtown?

looked up their separate wiki pages, and both cities have a separate population, so that doesn't really make much sense. There must be a line drawn somewhere. Is it exactly at the state border?

I think Kansas City on the Mo side was originally named just Kansas. To avoid confusion when Kansas became a state, the named changed to Kansas City.

The drive is literally a few minutes, either by I-70 interstate, or by the viaduct. You can see the other city quite clearly no matter what side of the state line you are on. Maybe a couple miles seperate them, if that.

Yes, it's at the border. There is a road that seperates the two called State Line Rd.

Sounds like it's similar to Memphis, TN and West Memphis, AR.

The big river separates the two.

Yeah the south part of Johnson County (Overland Park, Leawood, northern part of Olathe) is where the new money is. It's pretty damn nice and are expanding/building at a rapid rate.

KCMO has some nice areas too, like along Ward Pkwy with the mansions, parts of Blue Springs, North KC area, Raymore, and Lees Summit where we both live.

What area in Lees Summit do you live if it's okay to ask? I'm in Eagle Creek and love it. Lees Summit is pretty sweet with the lowest crime rate in the metro area.

The KC metro area is actually pretty big with all it's sprawling suburbs.

Been through that area while on my way to Nola. You are dead on when it comes to the two downtowns, the river separates them. State Line Rd picks up south of the downtown area and seperates the two from there.

Of course West Memphis, AR is just a podunk town with zero redeeming qualities so I guess they're not entirely alike.
