About the USSR's hockey loss to the Americans at the 1980 Olympics.

Yikes. How time flies.

I am a very, very fortunate man. I witnessed the moon landing. I witnessed the Beatles. I witnessed Secretariat. And I witnessed Mike Eruzione scoring that go-ahead goal with 10 minutes left against the USSR. As I watched just now I got massive chills all over again.

Of course, it was all very hopeless going in... no way, no how. But then... ERUZIONE SHOOTS! SCORES! ERUZIONE HAS SCORED! AND THE UNITED STATES LEADS IT 4 TO 3!

You really had to be there.

You can stump many people by asking them who the US defeated to win the gold in hockey in the 1980 Olympics.

Didn't time or some big publication like that rank the final the most anti climatic moment in human history?

Can you imagine if the US lost in the final? Whole story would be ruined. Like if the Red Sox had lost in the World Series after winning the pennant against the Yankees?

Can anyone think of a story where the team did the hard part and blew it in the final? I can't but I'm sure there is one.

Something else really sticks out from my youth: UCLA's utter invincibility at college basketball.

Now you're going to make me Google it.

Look at the bracket challenge thread. Since you are the administrator for the bracket only you can make changes. The majority of those that have responded would like to see it changed from 10 brackets to 1.

Thanks

You are correct. Another sign, the old memory ain't what it used to be.

Exactly, because Finland wasn't the final and USSR wasn't the semifinal.

Nothing of that magnitude. A few examples off the top of my head:

- 1951 Giants, Bobby Thomson's walk off homer, lost the Series to the Yankees.

- 1972 Steelers, lost the AFCCG after the Immaculate Reception

- 1976 Yankees, Chambliss hit a walk-off homer in Game 5 of the ALCS, but they got swept by the Big Red Machine

- 1992 Braves losing the World Series
