With Gruden's take on Megatron's record being slightly tarnished because of this era of football, is there any case to say Dickerson's is as well because of football in that day and age?

What say you?

I would argue what AP is doing is more impressive since he's playing in an era where the passing game has become more important than the running game.

It's pretty much the same argument in reverse so yea I'd say so.

They are equally difficult to me.

Not really

But you could argue that Dickerson's record isn't as impressive as Peterson's

most amazing record

Norm Van Brocklin throwing for 554 yards in 1951

With all the many rule changes introduced to help passing, it still hasn't been broken

I feel bad for current players. It's not Megatron's fault he plays in 2012 and not 1992

Some people think OJ had the most impressive season (14 games)

You could also make the argument the other way, that because teams respect the passing game so much now, more running lanes are open.

That being said, regardless of excuses, both records are impressive.

I think you have to consider the records they're breaking and how long they've been held despite numerous rule changes.

Look at some of the wide receivers we've seen since Jerry Rice. Some of the backs we've seen since Dickerson. I don't care what age it is. Those two guys are something special to be able to take them down.

There's actually an even more incredible record than that

According to NFL Films, a guy in the 1950s had something like 16 sacks in one game

But it was before sacks were an official stat -- it was actually before the usage "sack" was even coined -- so it isn't in the record book

Yeah, I knew sacks weren't an official stat for a long time.

I remember Aikman got sacked 11 times his rookie year against the Eagles

Those early seasons in the Aikman, Irvin and Smith years were pretty rough for the Cowboys (although Smith wasn't there yet at that point).

I don't think rushing yardage has actually gone down (might have even gone up)

But you don't see as many feature backs these days getting the rock 20 times a game consistently over the course of a season

There is definitely more of a committee approach, you're right.

I wasn't taking that stance in what I said earlier, I was just throwing that out there.
