Yet there are a few other numbers Irsay mentions that really hit home in processing the transition.

"We've changed our model a little bit, because we wanted more than one of these," Irsay says, flicking up his right hand to show his Super Bowl XLI championship ring.

"(Tom) Brady never had consistent numbers, but he has three of these," Irsay adds. "Pittsburgh had two, the Giants had two, Baltimore had two and we had one. That leaves you frustrated.

"You make the playoffs 11 times, and you're out in the first round seven out of 11 times. You love to have the Star Wars numbers from Peyton and Marvin (Harrison) and Reggie (Wayne). Mostly, you love this."

Then Irsay flicks up his right hand again.

More like they underachieved in the playoffs BECAUSE of Manning.

Edit: 0-4 against Florida.

I actually agree for the most part, but I have to agree with some of the other posters. Manning simply wasn't at his best when it counts.

It's true. If you team has an ok running game and a good defense an above average QB can take you to the promise land.

Surely trading first round picks for shitty RBs is the way to build a champion

i still remember watching that 1 game in the swamp. Tenn and Manning had a nice lead, then got blown out by 30? Play after play, they were in his grill and butt fricking him.

Maybe he should have built a team based around the best defense in the NFL rather than a flashy offense.

Manning chokes, It's what he does. He's the Bobby cox of NFL QB's. Tons of talent and one title to show for it.

Tenn had like a 15 point lead and then florida beat them by 30? Play after play, they were in his grill and butt fricking him.

95. This hit to start the second half was a sign of things to come.

He's not wrong. The Colts could have built a better defense around him but a team with a hall of fame qb, two hall of fame wrs, a great rb in Edge, and a great TE should have achieved more success. Plus it's not like they didn't have a few stud defensive players too.

The Colts were so much better on paper than most of those Pats Super Bowl teams. Problem is that Dungy isn't half the in-game coach that Belichick is and Manning folds when it counts most.

While I prefer a great defense and a good offense rather than the other way around, those Colts teams underachieved because Manning underachieved. It's not like the style of play that worked in the regular season somehow became insufficient to win in the playoffs. It's that the guy largely responsible for that style of play being so successful in the regular season wasn't able to perform at such a high level in the postseason.

He's not wrong about them underachieving in the postseason under Peyton, but he's full of shite saying that that's why they went in another direction or whatever. It had everything to do with Peyton's shaky and unsure health and their ability to get Luck.
