And why would anyone choose Papi over Jeter exactly?

The only difference between David Ortiz and Carlos Delgado is that one had the benefit of playing for elite teams most of his career while the other was stuck on a team mired in mediocrity due to factors outside of his control.

Are we talking career or peak? Because those are totally different answers.

HR in big game.

quote:

Red Sox single-season home-run leader (54; 2006)
Tied with Babe Ruth for AL single-season home run record in road games (32; 2006)
Tied with Billy Hatcher for all-time postseason consecutive on-base streak (10)
Twice set single season record for home runs by a designated hitter: First in 2005 (43), then again in 2006 (47)
First player ever to hit two walk-off home runs in the same postseason (against the Angels (ALDS) and Yankees (ALCS), 2004)
First player in Red Sox history to hit 40 or more home runs in three consecutive seasons (2004–2006)
Ten seasons of 30 or more home runs (2003–2007, 2010, 2013–2016; most in Red Sox history)[41]
Ten seasons of 100 or more RBIs (2003–2007, 2010, 2013–2016; most in Red Sox history)[41]
Ten seasons of 30 or more home runs and 100 or more RBIs (2003–2007, 2010, 2013–2016; most in Red Sox history
)[41]

some of that.

if he had played in NY Yankee Stadium, he would have had 50 or 60 ten times.
right field is deep in Boston.
notice he has the all time road HR record. 32 tied with Babe Ruth himself.

Fact: Jeter led the league in offensive WAR twice during his career. Ortiz never finished in the top 3 in offensive WAR during his entire career. Jeter was far more offensively dominant at his position than Ortiz was at his.

Jeter. I would not have anyone on my team nicknamed Papi.

Little known fact: Papi is Spanish for "I have gay AIDS"

I'm a Red Sox fan.

Jeter was the better player, but man Papi was clutch AF. Love that guy

Ignoring the fact that he's a fat PED user, Ortiz was the better player.

If it's just a point of preference as to who I'd rather cheer for? Jeter.

ETA: That Auburn guy with Columbia as his favorite team will be here shortly to tell me all about how Ortiz never failed a test, I'm sure.

When you consider the offensive value at their position I disagree. Even in the era he primarily played, Jeter was in pretty rare air for what he brought to the table as a shortstop offensively.

Also Ortiz had a pretty clear three year peak where he was really good (05-07) then like ten other good seasons around that

Jeter had a ridiculous two year run in 98 and 99, the 06 season and his 09 season where he was 35 and also played the best defense of his career. Then he had a bunch of other good years around that (besides the last two).

'98 and '99 Jeter was great.

I think '99 was the year that he finished like 6th in the MVP voting behind 5 roid heads.

Don't like either, but this isn't hard.

Jeter. Gives your team more, gives better value over position replacement, and while both were defensive suckholes when playing the field, at least Jeter plays both ways.
