I am not going to excuse the blow out losses to elite from about 1996 until 2010 or so - we were never all that great during those years, and I can say that with a straight face. I was a student at ND during some of those years where people thought we were pretty good, and it was obvious to these eyes that we were not on the same tier as the powerhouses back then.

We lost to two top ten teams on the road by a combined four points in dramatic fashion this year. We are down nine starters at this point and are on our 3rd-string RB and back-up QB; we are also down our best CB, starting TE, our best DT, our starting OLB, both of our good nickels, on and on and on.

In a broader view, I really do think we are back on the same plane with the elite teams and can play with anyone right now. We are going to re-load next year and should be very damn good yet again. I would have loved to have seen what this team could have done if they'd stayed relatively healthy. In contrast to the fifteen years after Holtz left, we are putting a lot of very good players in the NFL now (Michael Floyd, Golden Tate, Zack Martin, Kyle Rudolph, Tyler Eifert, etc, etc). We have the talent that we didn't have a decade ago.

You'll get no excuses from me for our performance during those down years. We were perceived to be better than we actually were, and I was present for a lot of those USC, LSU, Ohio State, and so forth beatdowns that brought us back to reality. The program now looks and feels a lot different. We can really play now, and we've got the players we didn't have back then.

Terrible stretch but how many of those games were coached by Bob Davie, Tyrone Willingham and Charlie Weis? What a bad stretch of coaching hires, but it goes to show you how hard it is to find the right coach.

Lost starting QB, 2 RB, major injuries on Defense including best DB.

I think they are pretty dang good and held their own.

In my opinion, Brian Kelly is the AP Coach of the Year and it's not even close.

Dabo has a good argument, as well.

So does Ferentz, I suppose

It will be Ferentz in my opinion, especially if they make the playoffs.

I'd like to see Dabo win without Watson and Gallman. They wouldn't have gotten past FSU.

Ferentz? ........I'd rather watch paint dry.

If you can look past the off field stuff, yea he's great.

I'd give COY to Ferentz.

I think ND needs to go ahead and join the ACC full time. They need to get their players something to play for besides a National Title otherwise they have nothing to show for their success. Without a conference or division title, there's always that empty feeling about their season.

because im sure if Alabama only wins the SEC title they wont still feel empty about missing out on the national championship

making the playoffs and winning national titles are all that matter any more.

I like Notre Dame as an Independent. Usually, their schedule is tougher than anyone's in the country because they usually don't schedule 4 cupcakes a year.

Not going to happen. This article from Wetzel a few days ago is a great examination. Wetzel more than most understands ND's point of view and what makes us tick.

I don't think people realize just how important independence is for Notre Dame and the historical reasons behind it. It is crucial to the identity of the school in ways that bleed way beyond the football field. Swarbrick is also a lot better than his predecessor at navigating the current landscape to put us in the best position to stay independent.

I am not kidding in saying that there is a significant contingent at ND and in the alumni that would prefer to quit playing the sport altogether rather than join a conference.

Maybe I'm alone, but I look back at the 2014 Alabama team as a championship team. They took home hardware form the best conference in the country. We lost to OSU, and it sucked, but at least we had something to show for our season.

it was 28-42 with two minutes left in the game when Bama scored a garbage TD - dont be deluded.

Ohio State out-gained you distinctly too

You keep saying this along with other facts but you've never said 'why'...

Are you just regurgitating stuff you've been hearing your whole life without any explanation?
