It doesn't matter how big the playoff field is.

Whether there are two teams, or 64, there will always be those just left out of the mix who can "make a case" for why they should be included. Nothing will ever be perfect for everyone. The only true way nobody can bitch Is to have 8 conferences, with each champion going to the playoff.. But that's not what this thread is about.. It's simply about the fact that schools will bitch and moan that they were left out no matter how many teams are let in, and expanding the field isn't the answer.

Agreed. People even complain about NFL teams getting left out of the playoffs even though the system is not subjective at all. See the 11-5 Patriots in 2008.

Also, I guarantee the fans of whichever team has to travel to NO to play the 7-9 saints in the playoffs will bitch and whine like no tomorrow. Sometimes the system doesn't work perfectly, but that doesn't mean it should be changed. 4 team playoff is perfectly fine IMO. If one year we are left with 5 undefeated teams with tough schedules then maybe I'll change my mind. Whoever gets left out of the playoff this year can only blame themselves for losing a game or playing a high school schedule if it's FSU.

They might bitch because this idea is terrible.

Terrible idea, btw.

Agreed on the OPs comment, but with eight, I think you include all contenders. Sure the 9th team isn't happy.

FSU played Oklahoma State, Notre Dame, and Florida out of conference. They tried to play a difficult schedule. It's not like they could just get into the SEC.

It absolutely matters. Especially this year when the only undefeated has not looked great, barely scraping by. We can listen to the top 6 this year probably more than any other year in memory. We can't listen to 7-8, though. Sorry, Marshall--frick you. Mississippi State?--get fricked. Georgia? And you think we'll listen to 64-65?

A tournament with conference champions is the way to go.

Wrong wrong wrong. Team 5 actually could win it all, team 65 not so much. 8 is the perfect number. This isn't about bitching it's about the number of teams that have a legit shot to win it. Two 1 loss conference champs being left out is unacceptable.

That's why 4 teams never made any sense. No matter what, at some time or another, at least one deserving conference champion is going to get left out. Now the big 12 is crowning co champions and it's making it even worse.

Exactly. Team 65 might be able to say they're really team 64 but any argument that they deserve a shot at the title is laughable.

Not sure 8 is perfect -- 6 or 10 or 12 would give the best teams a bye. 6 might work because the top 5 conference champs (regardless of conference) plus the top wild card or (rarely) the 6th conference champ would get in.

Someone posted a system where there would be 12. The top four would get a first round bye and a second round home game. The next four would get a first round home game. That would mean teams would be playing for seeding in games that would be meaningless under the current system.

y This is silly. Sure, when 64 basketball teams make a tourney, number 65 thinks they were screwed BUT NO ONE argues they actually has a shot to win the thing. The 65th tan just thinks it deserved to be part if the fun. I suspect if we made the CFP 8 teams with 5 conference champs and three at large teams, #9 would be pissed but very few people would argue they were much of a shot to win it all.

like all other sports, there should be two ways to get in.

16 team playoff

12 conf. champs

4 at large bids

this way- every game counts and you must have a conference championship game. this give you two ways to get in.

if you drop your first game of the season to Mcneese st., season is not over. you have a chance to get in by winning your conference.

this is what's happening to osu right now. essentially, if they don't get in, it's because they dropped a game to v.t. ending their season. get it?

This is just as arbitrary as what we have today IMO, with th downside of being more rigid.
