Co-worker is a Bucs fan and he says he's getting better and better with every game but he still doesn't think he'll ever be a top 1/2 of the league QB.

I'd say I'll ask him tomorrow when I see him for more details but I'd be lying. Cause I don't ever think about getting info for internet forums when I'm at work and if I did I would't bump this thread with that info.

He looked terrible in the first game and I haven't watched him since but he's supposedly getting better every game.

So did Josh Freeman.

but at least Jameis looks more competent and doesn't seem to be phased by missed opportunities or mistakes.

should be interesting to see where he and Mariota stand in about 5 years...

If Mariota doesn't get hurt I think he's a better bet- if you look at what makes Manning and Brady great it's not deep balls, its high efficiency short and mid range passes (a lot like spread QBs in college) - crossing routes, mid comebacks, slants all of which are Mariota's bread and butter- Jameis at his best is a different type of QB like a Favre / Big Be hybrid- which is good but not the new model which punishes interceptions a lot more ( 2 to 1 used to be a pretty damn good ratio for TD:INT now the truly elite guys are like 4-5 to 1 at least, gunslinger types just aren't as valued anymore.

No. He made an absolutely terrible decision to leave college

If Evans could catch at all, he'd be pretty legit.

What makes those guys great is their pre snap adjustments and their post snap reads. Same with Brees. Fantastic field vision after the snap, masters at reading the defense.

Mariota does not make reads. Still. He never did in college and he isn't in the NFL. Ten has had a gimmicky offense from the start. There were a handful of plays yesterday where he had two pass options, the rest were all just designed for him.

I'm not saying he can't do it, but he isn't yet. Jameis is, though. Jameis made full-field reads in college, which is why he was the pick over Mariota.
