Listening to Dan Patrick, and I know he's not a baseball guy, but this motherfricker is claiming that there's nobody playing baseball, when all statistics show that baseball participation is on the rise. And attendance is still some of the highest it's ever been.

Claiming the games take too long even though the games are taking just a few minutes longer than they did in the year 2000.

They do have a point when they talk about how viewership outside of the region where teams play is still kinda down.

But I refuse to believe that there's anything wrong with baseball. In fact, I believe the game is doing great right now and has a whole lot of great young players and that's a good sign for years to come.

Eta: For frick's sake, they're on pace to hit over 6,000 home runs this season and have the most strikeouts in a season.

Nope.

It's not as star-driven as basketball or even football, but baseball is doing just fine.

No

Regionally it's always been strong

I'd imagine with the way LA, NYY, Boston, and the Cubs are set up for the next decade, that certainly won't hurt the national interest

Baseball is a regional sport now
They don't market the stars
They have games starting at 7pm and lasting till 10, they should start at 5:30.
Games last longer because of how many pitching changes they make now
Attendance has grown every year
Viewership is fine in each region
Revenue is booming

This is the biggest factor IMO.

If you're in an area without a team, no one really cares about the MLB.

Dan Patrick is usually a year late on most of his opinions.

His takes and stances come from those four morons he chooses to surround himself with. I don't listen to him anymore because of those four frankly.

Ppl should remember that Dan Patrick is a news reader. His skill is hosting highlight shows. He was a great interviewer at one time but that was years ago. Coasting now.

Point being, he's not really a talk show host. It's not the best way to showcase his talents

Just wait, the ratings for last night will be abysmal and it will start the "baseball is dying" comments again

At one point they had a 2.0 in the 18-49 year old bracket. Official numbers haven't been released yet though

Maybe saying baseball is dying is hyperbole driven, but you can't say the sport is thriving and booming right now either.

that would ruin Houston's attendance. Unless you work downtown there is no way of getting to the stadium by 530

With the young Shakespeare drama Willdebuting on TNT on Monday too, up the cable dial the Disney-owned sports net had a very good night – almost as good as Aaron Judge. Hitting a 5.5 in metered markets, last night’s live 2017 Home Run Derby was up an almost out-of-the-park 38% over last year. Peaking with a 6.2 rating in the 9:15-9:30 PM ET slot, the 8-10 PM Home Run Derby also delivered its best result for ESPN since 2009. In Yankees outfielder Judge’s home market of NYC, the Derby snagged a 10.8 in MM ratings. That is the best the slugging showcase has done in the nation’s biggest market since records started being kept in 1998.

Ending games at 10-10:30 makes a lot of families not take kids to midweek games. I would certainly be open to double header on the weekend and less games during the week as well.

why because revenue is growing, attendance is increasing, regions ratings are rising.... But it is not thriving?

I guess, but the regions where the teams play include virtually every major metro area in the US.

There is nothing wrong with baseball

The HR Derby always does well in ratings for some reason. I'm not sure if it's due to people liking dingers or the power of ESPN or some other reason but that event always gets great ratings.

The problem with baseball, are the all or nothing hitters and the pitching being so great from starters-closers. There is less excitement and balls in play now. Sure more home runs, that's needed (people think the balls are juiced), but more strikeouts is boring to be honest. That all-star game was boring AF last night.

On the surface you're 100% correct, but viscerally speaking it's not as popular with kids as it was in 80's and 90's.

Soccer is largely to blame. Lacrosse is even growing leaps and bounds.

Eh... that's too early for most metro areas and fans that want to attend games after work/school/etc.

I could see going to 6:15 or 6:30 start times.

I would certainly appreciate it if all the Astros' west coast games started a little earlier.

The Braves usually play at 7. I watched a ton of games at 6CST over the years. Perfect time slot. Get home, eat dinner, leave the game on in the background. About the time it usually wraps up get the kids to bed. But if I lived in that market, I'm with you. I wouldn't be taking the kids to the games during the week.
