Is there a more valuable player in sports than a QB you know your team can win with?

Looking at the contract Wilson just got, and what Flacco got a few years ago. At first glance I think man these guys are good QBs but how do you use so much cap for one good player?

But then I think about it, and having a QB that you are positive you can win a super bowl with has got to be one of the most relieving things as a GM

I'd say the tennis player is pretty valuable to his success.

Doesn't mean you're going to win a championship. There are a lot of great QB's that didn't win a championship and then you have guys like Dilfer that got it done.

But it is comforting knowing you have an elite guy at the helm.

Elite QBs are amongst the most scarce resources in all of sports. If that's what you're trying to say I agree. One could argue a great center in the NBA is harder to find these days.

Basically what I mean is if you look at all positions in team sports, is there anything more important than having a QB you know you can win a super bowl with

You are right. There are exceptions where teams will be built around defense and a running game that have won the SB before. But it takes a lot more of making the correct picks or FA than having one of those QB's you speak of.

you see it all over the NFL, QB's are a premium. You see so many teams struggle with bad QB play. Some it's because the QB legit sucks, and some it's because the team around them aren't good enough to make a QB serviceable. But you can usually tell which QB's can survive with good teams around them. I can definitely understand why an NFL team will spend alot of money securing a serviceable/good QB.

Yep, I guess it's excusable when teams pay these QBs such a large portion of their budget, even though it rarely works out because the rest of the team almost certainly suffers

Nope. And nothing else comes close IMO.

You are right it rarely does. But i think teams almost accept sucking because the team around the QB sucks. You can fix that somewhat, but you cannot fix a shitty QB.

Hockey goalie is up there. OK, Chris Osgood won a bunch of Cups, proving that if you have a team full of Hall of Famers, you only need an All-Star level goalie, and not a truly elite one.
