They are in the discussion for sure. I think one thing that benefits them in this discussion is the fact the rules are slanted against them, yet they get the job done. Also, let's say they win the Super Bowl and they do it by beating the Patriots. Knocking off a Tom Brady and Peyton Manning team would be quite the accomplishment, especially if they blow out the Pats.

The 49ers group in 1994 was excellent. Another group that was great was Oakland's Soul Patrol in 1976. Willie Brown, Skip Thomas, Jack Tatum and George Atkinson were crazy good and were feared.

Any secondary with Jason David and Fred Thomas is the best ever.

that ravens secondary in 2000 was sick as all hell. a top 3 CB in mccallister, starks, woodson, and i forget their SS

that whole D outside of DE was an all-pro team

boulware/lewis/sharper at LB

adams/siragusa were 2 vince wilforks clogging up the middle

I think the 1983 Raider secondary was better with Lester Hayes, Mike Haynes, Vann McElroy and Mike Davis.

That ravens team had a better overall D. But that secondary is not as good as LOB.

i think this is a huge point. They don't get to intimidate WRs coming across the middle like those old school groups did. They're not supposed to hold, clutch, and grab after 5 yards. QBs aren't to be touched, so they're less rattled nowadays. What they've done in this anti-defense era has been amazing.

You are young and have not seen how different the game was played back in the 70's......

Even the 49ers secondary of 1981 was better than Seattles current edition... Are they good??? Sure. But not close to the best of all-time........

I think they're up there for sure

I would play with 10 men on the current Saints defense, as long as one of those 10 men was Kam Chancellor.

The 70's and 80's secondaries wouldn't be as good with today's rules.

Jack Tatum was a boss but would've been ejected in the 1st quarter every game for targeting.

I would take the 1994 49'ers

They had Eric Davis and Sanders at Corners with McDonald and Hanks at Safeties.

The 81 49'ers had 3 rookies, that is why I do not put them at the top.

If Pats and Seahawks play it will be interesting.

You have Belichick, who was the mastermind behind having his secondary hold all game, and forcing the refs to call, which most didn't. And you have the Seahawks, who hold on every play in secondary.

I don't blame them for taking advantage of refs not wanting to make the call every pass play.

Does Belichick work the refs for the calls?? Should be interesting.

Well, here's some one who has and his opinion on the LOB.

Former Cowboys personnel executive Gil Brandt, who has been associated with the NFL since 1960. "The '85 Bears, they played against 'Red' and 'Brown.' There weren't a lot of formations and motion and all of that. Football was simpler than it is now. It was man on man, so to speak. With all of the offensive looks now, it's harder."

So I guess the game was different back then.
