Who is the best cornerback in the NFL? Which cornerbacks are hurting your fantasy receivers week after week? It seems that casual fans have a “big four” when talking about the best cornerbacks in the league. Those four are Richard Sherman, Darrelle Revis, Joe Haden and Patrick Peterson. Regardless of how they are actually performing on the field, they seem to always be considered the top four in the league. In this article I will break down how all of the big four are not only doing this year, but how they have done since 2012. I have also added a cornerback that people better start paying attention to. Not only has he been elite this year, he has been elite since 2012.

I am always confused when I see his name brought up amongst elite cornerbacks in the NFL. Peterson has allowed 21 TDs since 2012 which is more than double of that of Richard Sherman and Darrelle Revis combined. His YPT average of 7.91 is also unacceptable for someone thought of as an elite cornerback. Not only is Peterson the worst cornerback on this list, he isn’t even a top 20-25 cornerback in the league. You should be excited if your fantasy receiver is facing Peterson, just ask Julio Jones owners.
2014
Targets: 72
Catches allowed: 44
Yards allowed: 609
Yards per target: 7.91
TDs allowed: 8
INTs per target: 2.8%
QB rating against: 113.7

2012-2014
Targets: 257
Catches allowed: 142
Yards allowed: 1,968
Yards per target: 7.66
TDs allowed: 21
INTs per target: 4.7%
QB rating against: 89.9

Furthermore, since Patrick Peterson isn't really a top cornerback in the NFL, how does that change your top 5-10 list?

Pro Football Focus ranked their top 10 on November 26th, 2014 (can't find a more updated list):

1) Darrelle Revis
2) Chris Harris
3) Vontae Davis
4) Richard Sherman
5) Brandon Flowers
6) Desmond Trufant
7) Antonio Cromartie
8) Corey Graham
9) Sean Smith
10) Casey Heyward

He went to LSU, so he's awesome. Don't ask questions.

comparing just stats ignores the CB responsibility on the field.

Sherman's stats are great, but so is his front 7 and safety help over the top.

Not to mention that another guy on his team has to cover the #1 receiver a majority of the time.

True. All those NFL guys are LSU alums, especially the ones that made him one of the highest paid corners. Amazing we have so many powerful Alumni

I couldn't read the rest of the article, but I assume Chris Harris, cornerback of the Denver Broncos.

If you take an extreme example. Week 1 against the Packers Sherman defended Boykin all game.

That can be read a multitude of ways.

Patrick Peterson was paid on potential. Dude is an athletic freak. But at the end of the day, he's just not that good at shutting down wide receivers.

Wow. Never once have I ever heard of a pro in any sport getting his SECOND contract on potential.

Patrick Peterson may cover the #1 wide receiver almost all the time, but you also have to take into account that he does it pretty badly. The grades speak for themselves.

On the other hand, Richard Sherman may only cover one side of the field, but he also completely shuts down that side of the field.

I'm just pointing out that he is, simply, overrated in today's game.

Not only that, he shouldn't be mentioned among the best cornerbacks in the league.

Dude tricked people by making big plays every once in a while. But that's not what the position is about. It's about not getting beat.

People are blinded by his athleticism and explosiveness, as they were at LSU.

He's a good, almost great corner to be sure, but he is no lockdown hall of famer. If he wasn't such a ridiculous athlete, he'd just be another above-average corner that few people would discuss.
