I don't understand why the rules say he gets a ring.
If you aren't on the roster during the playoffs, you didn't do shite to win a championship.

So let's say Steph Curry plays 82 games and the Warriors go 73-9 and yet gets hurt in the final game and therefore doesn't make the playoff roster.

He'd still be on the playoff roster. Just perhaps inactive. He'd still be on the roster.
And not playing because you are hurt is a bit different than not playing because you are actually on the opposing teams roster, wouldn't you say?

Poor wording. I should have said why is it allowed/standard practice/etc that a player who got cut months before the playoffs gets a ring if his former team goes on to win a championship.
