can a QB just huck a ball off a defender's chest or legs to avoid intentional grounding?

I would think that if it hits a defender then there wouldn't be a penalty but wasn't sure if there was a provision for that situation.

i'd imagine the receiver would have to be in the area

It would still be intentional grounding. Has to be close to an eligible receiver.

Interesting question, but it is pretty much impossible for a defender not to be close to an offensive player since their job is to defend those players.

Not to mention, a QB would never assume they would drop it.

Intentional grounding will be called when a passer, facing an imminent loss of yardage due to pressure from the defense, throws a forward pass without a realistic chance of completion.

It's a judgement call.

Are you suggesting that the QB should throw the ball AT a defender on purpose?

I think he's suggesting that he should throw it right in the facemask or chest of a defensive tackle to avoid a sack.

Not just underhand it to him.

So you want to intentionally throw it at someone? This is not baseball.

on that play by Romo, you could throw it right off his legs and be fine.

Notice I didn't say 12 yards downfield into his fricking hands?

if you are georgia, you can throw it off a defender with an eligible receiver in the area and still get called for intentional grounding

I don't know. I mean like there's a rusher coming at you, no options so just throw it off his nuts. Just like it got batted away at the line.

I get it sounds weird, but just wondering if it's allowed when you wouldn't see where the ball was actually headed if it got downfield

I think if you wound up and gunned it right at a guys helmet that you could make a case for it.

Anything below the shoulders and they will call it grounding.
