If a quarterback throws an illegal forward pass and it gets intercepted can the other team decline the penalty?

Under what scenario would the defense decline this penalty?

Original line of scrimmage was midfield or in the offense's territory, the interception happened inside the defense's 5 yards line, it's late in the half, and the weather/field condition is very bad.

Or it was 4th and long and you expect to get better field position from a punt for turnover on downs.

i think illegal forward pass is a loss of down?

so the QB throws it illegally on 4th down, it gets picked, but the return doesn't go past the original line of scrimmage. you accept it, they lose the ball on a turnover on downs and you have better field position than the INT return...

so if it becomes a pick 6 you obviously decline it

Wouldn't those be scenarios for accepting the penalty and nullifying the interception?

Since this is kind of a rules thread, let me ask this: Can a team with no timeouts throw a legal pass into the middle of the field (say to get into scoring range) then throw a backwards lateral out of bounds to stop the clock?

I'm a dumb arse. It's been too long since I've seen football since last winter.

Of course, you decline the penalty. I meant to ask when would the defense accept the penalty and some situations have been mentioned.

Couldn't it be interpreted as forward motion stopped and the ref could give the ball to the offense at where the lateral was thrown, and thus the time still keeps running?

I've thought about that, but all I can remember is the play in the USC-ND (bush-push) game where they fumbled the ball backwards out of bounds and the clock was stopped.

It would be considered a fumble out of bounds, which if I remember correctly does not stop the clock and has a runoff involved.

This thread is discombobulated.

You shouldn't be able to decline the penalty just b/c INT.

An illegal pass is an illegal pass.

NFL has quite a few bizarre rules...like this one.

Kick-off rolls to the 4-yard line but stays in bounds...kick-off team bearing down, Packers are screwed...going to be stuck inside their 10 yard line.

But no, if you step out of bounds and then field the ball, the ball is now deemed kicked out of bounds and you get the ball at your own 40 yard line.

And crazily, if you get a TD scored on you...it's your decision whether to kick-off or receive the next possession.
