If the Warriors fail to make the NBA Finals, does it tarnish "the record"

I mean what does the wins record mean if you can't close?

It doesn't tarnish the record but it does tarnish how the team will be remembered

This. The record is what it is....the best single-season record of all time. Now, if they fail to make it out of the conference finals, it would certainly bolster the argument of anyone saying that they are not the best team in NBA history.

The real record isn't 73. It's 88.

By the way, they've already lost as many games as the '96 Bulls did total.

IF they don't win the championship, it means they chased a regular season accolade. That's all.

I think it'll further the narrative that so many people have that regular season NBA is worthless. The "no defense is played in the regular season" cronies will be everywhere.

Agreed.

But did the toll wear on the starters? The pressure to keep playing when they should have rested?

Of course it does, nobody remembers or cares about the Mariners record.

Does anybody remember the 2001 Seattle Mariners at all?

They will likely be forgotten pretty quickly.

Let's be honest here... of course it tarnishes the record. You and I and everyone will always know there is a "yeah but..." when those 73 wins get brought up.

In a vacuum it shouldn't matter since the record is the record. But you know that we will all see that record differently if they don't win it all.

Just stop with this. This was going to be the theme if San Antonio won. It was already building with Steph's ankle and knee tweaks -- that, somehow, because of freak injuries, Kerr should have sat guys like Pop. I don't think the record took any physical toll, and the players have gotten plenty of rest in the playoffs. The teams hadn't played since Wednesday, so everybody was fresh last night. Now, whether there is added psychological pressure due to the record -- yes, I believe that.

those Bulls only won 87 games that year... round 1 was still best of 5

but yeah, not winning the title will diminish the record

Of course it would. It would also bolster the notion that their title last season should have an asterisk next to it.

the record is still the record. maybe will be remembered a notch below the patriots undefeated season simply because the pats were going for the undefeated record.

the warriors are still really good. plus, it's not like they just popped up one year, won 73 games, and disappeared. they won the title last year. the could very well win the title next year, or the next year (if we're assuming they don't win this year).

if they become a dynasty, the 73-win record will be remembered big time, i think. it will just be a footnote that they didn't win the title that year (but did win multiple titles in other years).

You can maybe make this argument with the mental aspect of chasing the record and being mentally exhausted, and really that would have only affected them in the Houston series.
Physically, they managed their starters minutes REALLY well. That argument holds no water.

Well yeah, I meant to actually have the record all their own, they have to win 88.

Absolutely it will, no one will care about this record. See the Mariners and Red Wings. This place is going to be crazy if the Warriors lose. I cannot wait.

It will tarnish it for your typical fan...but your typical fan is a retard.
