i think these are the five pitchers in the running

Madison Bumgarner
2.14 era, 3.00 fip, 3.42 xfip, 22% k-bb%, 1.00 whip, 3.4 war

Noah Syndergaard
2.45 era, 2.10 fip, 2.44 xfip, 25.6% k-bb%, 1.13 whip, 4.3 war

Jose Fernandez
2.54 era, 2.07 fip, 2.27 xfip, 29.4& k-bb%, 1.03 whip, 4.5 war

Jake Arrieta
2.76 era, 2.99 fip, 3.31 xfip, 17.2% k-bb%, 1.08 whip, 3.2 war

Johnny Cueto
2.53 era, 2.79 fip, 3.36 xfip, 17.7% k-bb%, 1.03 whip, 3.8 war

I like Fernandez now, but it is close. All those guys plus Strasburg and Scherzer (now that he seems to have settled his HR problems) will be in the running.

Also, not really sure about your WAR, but Baseball-reference (updated every day) has Bumgarner at a 4.2 for pitchers. And the other guys are all off as well.

Didn't the Braves (of all teams) get him pretty good recently too? But yeah, he has been filthy. That K rate is unreal. My only quibble with Fernandez is that he doesn't consistently go as deep into the game as some of those other guys.

He also has the tendency to get roughed up. He's unhittable until he has one of his starts

If Kershaw doesn't come back, I would say Bumgarner, and then Fernandez and Strasburg fairly close behind him.

1. Jose
2. Thor
3. MadBum

But MadBum will probably win due to being on a better team and name appeal.
