I think Memphis might have a legitimate shot at making the CFP

First off, they have already beaten power five teams by a combined 92-47 (Mississippi and Kansas). One of those teams controls their own destiny to win the "hardest division in college football."

Secondly, their remaining schedule (based on the Massey Composite Computer Polls) will be against:

@ 22nd (Temple)
@ 23rd (Houston)
33rd (Navy, basically a P5 team)

ranked teams in the country.

They also will have to beat the 22nd ranked team again, on a neutral site.

3rd, they have both an efficient defense and a potent offense with a legit QB that can make plays.

This might be the perfect storm for a non-P5 team to make the CFP. If Kansas were better, this would almost be a shoe-in if they won out.

Houston is the best team in that conference IMO. I don't see how the winner of that conference gets in over a 1 loss P5 team.

They have a small chance but would likely need Clemson to lose and the Big 12 to cannibalize.

The Sugar Bowl looks much more likely.

No need to quote it, it is true.

As for your OP, I agree that the they've got a legit shot.

So, what if OSU, Clemson, LSU, and TCU all won out?

Two of the power 5 would need to have 2 losses.

I can see the Pac-12 and ACC getting there if Clemson Clemsons.

Easy, OSU would be out, Memphis is in.

You would have to have multiple teams from the P5 to have loses. But Memphis will keep receiving high marks as long as Ole Miss keeps winning.

i have said that i strongly believe an undefeated AAC team has an excellent shot at the playoff. the problem being that they need some things to happen.

a stanford loss (i think this is likely)

do they get in over 1 loss big ten, acc (clemson/fsu), big 12, or sec? probably not. they need 2 losses from 2 P5 conference champions, which isnt totally insane.

Unfortunately, Kansas has been arguably the worst P-5 program in the last five years. They are tremendously terrible.

If FSU beats Clemson and wins the conference, I'd prefer to see Memphis get a bid in their place.

Clemson would be out since they're not a conference champ, and FSU at 12-1 has a mediocre resume at best.

Temple beating ND this weekend would do wonders for the conference's chances to get a team in the playoff.

Yeah, but they're not going to beat Houston is the problem.

Houston has to play the same Memphis and Navy teams, plus Temple in the title game. They might have a better chance, because Houston and Temple could both be 12-0 in that game and it would be even more hyped.

Houston also beat Louisville and Vandy in this scenario, if that counts for anything.

An undefeated matchuip between Houston and Temple would be great. Temple would have wins over Penn State and a very good Notre Dame team.

ETA: if Temple can somehow beat Notre Dame this weekend, it would be the biggest win the conference has had by far. The AAC needs that win for any of their teams to have a chance. It would do so much to validate the conference.
