This is not a flame, I haven't watched it in years but was a big fan as a child. we all can agree the story lines are fake. If the promoters decide who will be champion, why does Wikipedia list number of championships? If you read a wiki page of a wrestler you would think championships were actually fought for and accomplished.

Why is seven time champ better than just being undefeated champ for a long time like Gilberg?

I wonder if Pac-Man Jones' Wikipedia page lists him as a 1-time World Tag Team champion? Or David Arquette's has him as a World Heavyweight Champion?

Why would you think that if you know what the product is all about?

Titles are "accomplished" in a way. Management puts the belt on the wrestlers or "entertainers" that have either proven or they feel have the potential to put butts in the seats.

you're right on a theoretical level, in that Vince can make anybody at any time the champion on his whim...

but in practice, guys are putting in YEARS and YEARS hoping for a shot at the belts, and if they're booked to win, it should rightly be seen as an accomplishment worthy of wikipedia

That's my point. I'm not denying the physicality of wrestling or the hard work it takes but ultimately Vince is deciding who he wants as champ and gives it to him. Not exactly a statistical accomplishment.

Think of it more like oscars or Emmys than sports accomplishments.

This.

A big chunk of the revenue for a wrestling company comes from the numbers that they draw at the gate. Your champions are typically going to be your headliners and, in turn, who most of the crowd is going to show up to see. By a guy having a title put on him, they are basically putting all of their trust in a guy to connect with the fans and drive revenue for the company. You're not going to see too many guys hold a title for years on end because that tends to get stale from an entertainment perspective after a while.

So when you see guys that are multi-time champions, that shows that they are good enough entertainers that the company was comfortable making them 'the man' several times over for several years.

It's part of the gimmick or kayfabe that is still kept alive. Remember people either think it's real or pretend it's real for the purposes of enjoying it.

It' also about building drama.

Yep. I remember reading a book by HBK in the 8th grade or so. I remember very distinctly him saying something like, "there are a lot of differences in 'on stage' and 'off stage' in the wrestling business... but 1 similarity is that being the champ makes you the #1 guy"

He then went on to list the reasons you pretty much did.
