in regards to his show boating attitude ie. bat flips, home run trot, and I am the greatest of all time. It seems the showboating attitude was encouraged back then and now it's more about team and not showing your opponent up. Hell Yasiel Puig has been criticized due to his bat flips. Could Henderson and players like his do what they did in this day and age of baseball. Hell you could even argue they would have issues with Ozzie Smith's flip.

If he put up the same numbers nobody would say a word.

Not if Brian McCann, Mall Cop had any say.

Yasiel Puig has been elite since Day 1 and he's criticized all the time and thrown at.

Rickey wouldn't be as effective since they don't steal as much. He'd be thrown at and criticized like Sanders was.

define "this day and age".

Rickey Henderson last played in 2003. Adrian Beltre, David Ross, and Edwin Jackson, among others, were some of his teammates. All still play in the MLB.

No. He would get thrown at, especially from mediocre managers who try to deflect criticism for underachieving by giving soundbites about grit and heart and the old-fashioned way, the way Kirk Gibson did last year.

It is incredible to be how in the post-CTE world, throwing at players is still considered acceptable, but the baseball press has always had some of the most backwards thinking guys out there (and the sabremetrics issue has made that half even more intolerable).

I am a big fan of Rickey. That being said, Gordon and Hamilton are blazing fast and they get thrown out more than Rickey, so I doubt he could put up similar stats today, with improved catchers.

Rickey was so unique in so many ways.

I can't think of another huge name that hit right exclusively and threw left.

I think if he doesn't go to the Yankees and stays in Oakland his stolen bases would be increased by 100.

Crazy huh? He's the only one isn't he? It's crazy for me to imagine because I hit right and threw lefty too. I pitched though. Not one time did I ever think what I was doing was THAT rare though.

Also hit right/threw left

Some people just get a pass because they are so absurd. Brian Wilson is weird AF, but nobidy holds it against him. With Puig, I think there's just a hint of...maybe not racism, but perhaps xenophobia? He's not American and thus there's a gap that exists between him and the average individual. Most importantly, wasn't he initially very brusque and aloof with the media? Supposedly because of language, but let's be real, if you don't give them their sound byte they will go out of their way to villify you. One thing Rickey wasn't shy about -- talking to the media.

I think he gets painted as an eccentric and remains popular.
