For the first time in a few years the Lakers at least have a group of players with potential. The season will have to play out to see what players will improve enough for the Front Office to develop a firmer strategy.

Kobe's swan song of a season wreaked havoc on young players attitude when the focus had less to do with winning than just enduring the circus like atmosphere on and off the court. You can't even say last season was a rebuilding season. It was playground basketball all year. This upcoming season will be different. Not the playoffs so much as a look in to see what they have or don't have. Walton will be coaching his young arse off for sure.

Russell. Don't write him off yet.

Ingram. Real deal.

Clarkson. Improved team player and scorer.

Randle. Needs to get better to not become trade bait.

Zuboc. Raw. He is part of the reason Mosgov was brought in.

Mosgov. Serviceable center. Much like the Warriors center was the last two years.

Deng. Will be a stabilizing and effective player.

Nance. Will continue to work motive.

Like someone said earlier, this could be a 36, 37, or 38 win season barring no injuries.

I never thought of that. Interesting.

What's troubling is that they didn't really get here by virtue of foresight. They traded for Dwight and lost him for nothing. They lost Pau for nothing. They tried and didn't get Aldridge. They didn't even get a meeting with Durant. They were trying to tread water this whole time and struck out over and over.

Well the Buss family is steering the ship, so none of their strikeouts surprised me.

They're in a good spot but not because of intelligent design. It's by happenstance. And they're trying to mess it up. Signings like Mozgov indicate that they still don't get it. 4 year deal makes no sense.

It's funny, even when the Lakers screw up, something decent falls into their lap. They got Russell and Ingram in consecutive years which is really fortunate, they've found guys like Nance and Clarkson that were definitely under-the-radar guys, and they got a coach that's not only a popular young prospect, but a guy not too far removed from the glory days. In typical Laker fashion, the basketball gods give them breaks even in lean years.

quote:

Someone like Riley or West would've let Kobe walk/retire, you offer him half of what he ended up getting. Meanwhile you develop guys like Clarkson, Randle, Russell and Nance without Kobe here to stunt their growth.

I really don't think Kobe stunted their growth too much. Again, timing is everything. Were those guys gonna thrive in a Byron Scott offense? Would they play hard without a veteran presence during a a 17-win season? A young, bad team with a bad coach probably wouldn't develop as much as you think. These guys now get to run the show with a young, players' coach at the helm.

I truly think things worked out for the best. The fans and players got to witness Kobe for a little longer, he was handsomely rewarded for all he put into that franchise, the team sucked so bad that they loaded up on young assets, and they got their top target as a head coach after he spent some time under another young, new head coach in the West.

To answer the original question, the Lakers are still 2-3 years away from being in the conversation.

Russell is a team cancer
Clarkson -
Ingram - 180 pounds, will get demolished in the post and on defense
Randle - undersized 4
mozgov - bench player

They're a couple of years from even being in playoff conversation.

Russell - after one year you are writing him off as cancer? I say not yet. 13 pts 3 reb 3 assists per game means many NBA teams would like to have this 2nd year player with lots of upside.

Clarkson 15 pts 4 reb 2.4 ast are no laughing matter in the NBA.

Randle - he may be undersized, but he still averaged 11 pts and 10 reb a game. and now he will be paired with Luol Deng. He STILL shows potential.

Ingram. Yeah, and they said Durant was too light too. Will Ingram be a Durant, maybe not, but Ingram does have the potential to be a good to great player.

This is why I say that THIS SEASON is the season to judge what the Lakers have or not have. As a Lakers fan, I can look forward to seeing them try to look better for a change. Plus, glad Kobe is gone.

Russell is a ball hog.

The opposite of SA Spurs and GS Warriors.

people are sleeping on Randle. Remember he's basically just finished his rookie season. he's a beast on the boards and can handle the rock for a big man / take his man off the dribble.

his game reminds me of vin bakers.

Weighing 196 currently. He was in the 160's after his senior season of HS. I don't think it's far fetched for Ingram to get up to 220 by his second season
Ingram doesn't look any different now in Summer League than he did at Duke

Question being, if the Lakers are a high lottery team next year, what do you feel is the best move for them?
