Throw out your ideas.

My idea:

Create a national referee guild. They would personally supply refs for all college and pro sports. The refs would. E paid through the guild, not directly from the leagues.

The refs would not know which game they will be reffing until 1-2 days before hand.

Refs will be open to audit.

The guild will publicly come out on controversial calls.

Refs will be routinely audited.

Reffing will be a year round career with continuous training and evaluation by peers,

How exactly is your guild being funded to pay these guys if the leagues aren't paying them?

Technology is the answer.

Oh, the leagues would pay the guild and then the guild would pay the refs. There's at least a little bit more seperation

This sounds like a college.

What happens when they want to start a team?

Who refs the refs?

Uh.. what needs to be fixed? For the most part, they do a good job.

The NFL wouldn't want to cede control.

All I see is more money for the same product.

Simplify the rules, less judgment penalties.

Pay them enough to make it a full time job. That's not practical though.

Have someone reviewing the video upstairs. Put a radio in the lead refs ear. If there is a question about a call, call a meeting with the other refs to "discuss" the call (i.e., give the guy upstairs enough time to review), receive the correct call from upstairs, make the correct call.

I'm fine with throwing someone out who noticeably tries to murder someone's face with the crown of their helmet.

Problem is not everyone on a football field is a piece of shite and true targeting(at least the way I think of it) is pretty rare.

When we're reviewing a play to see how hard a defenders ear hole accidentally swiped a WR who ducked his own head, we're fricking lost.

The NFL just needs its refs to be full time. When they aren't reffing, they are studying to better their craft.

With all of their money, this is a paltry cost. The product is suffering bad right now and the ratings show it, so I expect this will happen soon.

The ratings don't suck because the officiating is poor.

It's this. The only thing that's surprising is that people are surprised when old white guys can't process the quick movement fast happening plays of the best athletes in the world.

Make being an NFL referee a full time job. Get younger guys who are mostly former players or coaches. Pay them well. The end.
