I know there are people on this board who closely follow Tulane and have insight into their turnaround. Correct me if I'm wrong but up until their most recent coaching change in 2011 they were horrible but this year they made a bowl game.

What did Tulane do to revitalize their program and can UAB replicate their success

They refocused their recruiting in the New Orleans area.

I am not unduly ragging on Birmingham when I say recruits are not attracted to the area.

Maybe if they moved athletic operations to Shelby County?

Recruiting more heavily in the New Orleans area and playing in a state with only one legitimate college football program.

Garrick recruited the Birmingham and the state of Alabama fairly well

Also, how are Tulane's athletic facilities

That would make no sense. Part of the current issue is UAB playing games off campus. Moving athletic operations to Shelby County would hold little to no appeal to a college age male

What's interesting is that their are several successful football programs in the state of Alabama as it relates to their respective divisions, Jacksonville State, South Alabama have all managed successful programs. I'm sure Auburn and Alabama along with fight Troy for Div-I recruits present a challenge but I don't think it's insurmountable

They are in the process of building a new stadium. The facilities are pretty nice otherwise

Birmingham is building a new stadium? If it's city money, can they even afford it?

Recruiting.

CJ has brought in a few pretty highly touted guys, but along with that there is a lot of professional coaching experience on the staff (CJ, mike Neu and Lionel Washington) and they are doing a great job evaluating talent of the not so highly rated recruits.

I agree that this is huge even for programs like LSU and Auburn. Talent evaluation was one of the things I most appreciated about Tubs. Basically Tulane hire a young energetic coach who built a strong staff

Johnson's the answer, although Toledo's recruiting picked up the last couple of years. The first few years post Katrina, we were recruiting at least 1/2 FCS players.
Johnson hired a good staff; he wasn't afraid to put his best athletes on defense either, particularly helpful in defenseless C-USA.

That's pretty sweet how many seats does it hold?

I believe it will seat 30,000. There are guys on here who could tell you more than I.

ETA: I'd imagine getting UAB out of Legion Field would be a good thing, just as it will be with Tulane getting out of the Superdome.

Step 1: Refer to the teams as the Birmingham Blazers, not UAB. Fresno State does something similar (official name is California State-Fresno)

Step 2: Move academic campus to the Lakeview area

Step 3: Build stadium near Sloss Furnace

This. Plus it doesnt hurt to have a coach with experience from the hometown NFL team. Curtis Johnson is a pretty damn good coach

Really Bird I like the idea of the stadium near Sloss but with the way UAB people complain, they might say that was to far and the name change would probably get panties all bunched up but actually might work. However, I don't get your reason for moving academic classes?

*Edit I get it classes would be near stadium but wouldn't it be better to have the dorms nearby instead?

Well I meant dorms and classroom buildings. Just everything other than the hospital. I mean, it's completely impractical and expensive and will NEVER happen. It's just an idea
