He doesn't make himself part of the game.
I mean the GOAT NFL play by play announcer was pretty monotone.
We all grew up with him if not the NFL then Madden Football.
Pat.

You're a Gus Johnson fan, aren't you?

I love sean. But what I think actually won him the job is his classic call from the Michigan St vs Michigan game last year, that shite still lives in my memory

dude is terrible
Edited to add:
I'm basing that off his college PBP mostly because I'm still boycotting the NFL...

I also like McDonough over Tirico. Why can’t ESPN get the next best game behind NBC? That is the biggest question in my view.

I’ll never understand the scheduling. I realize it is done far in advance...but who would ever think, oh wow, I think titans-colts would be a great MNF football matchup! Or even last week. Chicago was going to be terrible regardless. No clue what the intrigue there is/was.
I guess they think people give a shite about divisional rivalries, but if they are going to go that route, at least choose correctly. Pitt-KC would have been good for MNF this week
The other networks (CBS, FOX) fight for those big match-ups (Pitt/KC) for their own ratings. This is a negotiated agreement in the preseason and not a "priority" selection process. We as viewers lose in the process and get some garbage match-ups on Thursday (and sometimes Monday).

The MSB sure does hate most PBP guys

From what I watched of the game last night the action on the field wasn't bad. It's the production that ESPN is putting out, the whole thing just seems off. SNF has this production feel to it that gives you a big time feel. It's comfortable to watch, familiar, even if the games aren't the best just something about it that keeps you watching. ESPN MNF production just feels sterile. Maybe too much glitz. I hate the red carpet opening. I hate the analysts standing on the field. I hate how the crowd noise seems filtered. It's just crappy production.

You know what part of it is? The music. SNF has those chiming bells and the theme song sounds like an orchestra like production.
The MNF theme song, which was iconic, has been synthesized and reworked. It's ESPN's rendition of the theme and it just sounds off.

Like Bilj said, the guy is just extremely mundane.

His job is to narrate the action. In that lens he is totally unobjectionable. What more do you want from him?

This resume is why he became the lead guy on MNF. He is very good at his job. I think the pairing with Gruden is a bad pairing, Gruden tries to dominate.

This is a good point and could be why I don't like him on MNF
Could just be a bad pairing.

I think he's funny when he starts talking off the cuff and hamming it up with the other guy. Otherwise he has that nasally monotone voice.

My issue is now obvious now that I have seen the resume. He's a New England hockey guy doing an NFL broadcast.
I think he's good in all the other venues, but I think his chemistry with Gruden is terrible.
The first issue I had with him was one time when he was doing a CWS game and he went on like a 5 minute tirade because the Carolina Hurricanes were in the Stanley Cup Finals and that was an injustice because they should still be the Hartford Whalers.
Then a few weeks ago I noticed for the first time that he was going out of his way to point which players on the field went to Syracuse. It's like Mike Tirico when a Michigan player was in the game.
And then, of course, his daddy was Will McDonough who used to be on national NFL broadcasts, and his son is an executive with the Arizona Cardinals, and I remember why I call the NFL the "Nepotism Football League."

McDonough has one of my favorite calls ever, on Joe Carter’s WS walk off homer.
“Joe Carter with a 3-run homer......the winners, and STILL world champions Toronto Blue Jays.” Great call

I hate when ESPN takes the score bar off the bottom of the screen before the play. And then flashes it back up when the play is over. It’s distracting and unnecessary. Just keep it on the screen at all times like FOX does.

i think MNF needs to go back to 3 in the booth.
i agree with this, something about the MNF game doesnt feel right with only 2.
Especially with the shitty matchups for MNF now, they need 3 guys in the booth (with great chemistry) that can take the viewers mind off a bad game. Unfortunately, it's probably alot easier said than done.
