...schools like Kansas, Illinois, Iowa State, Purdue are just garbage year in, year out?

You would think some of these Power 5 state universities would have the resources to have a significant advantage in talent across the board over these mid-majors.

He was a joke as a HC the stupid move was running Mason off. Williams deserves the credit for that.

Probably has a lot to do with it, but why? Why can't an Iowa State hire a guy like Fuente or Herman?

Both were OC's without HC experience...maybe the Power 5 bottom feeders need to stop making HC experience a qualification.

Smaller schools have easier schedules as well.

Put those smaller schools in a power 5 and I assure you the depth will eventually catch up and the records will show

Purdue and Illinois had some decent teams in the past 10-15 years. It's possible to win there if you have a good coach. You can tap into Midwestern talent.

Kansas and Iowa State don't have much of a recruiting base. Plus, they're the second fiddle football school in the state.

Illinois is actually a pretty decent team this year. Record may not show it but they are a tough out.

Every bad school is one good hire away from being relevant. At that point it's a matter of if they can keep that coach or use the moment for another good hire.

I knew a guy who played at Kansas for him and he said the players absolutely would not play for him anymore.

TCU and Utah beg to differ.

Kansas and Illinois were in BCS bowls in 2007, that is not that long ago. Meanwhile Memphis was 2-10 4 years or so ago. Every year there will be some good mid major type teams , it is a bang up year for the AAC.

Becuase Herman and Fuente are smart enough to know that Iowa State has a ceiling, and will NEVER be a year end year out contender in their conference. It's better for those guys to be exceptional at a small school to then get noticed by the top programs in a P5 conference

I wonder if Matt Campbell from Toledo may look into one of those jobs. Although Tim Beckman went from UT to illinois, but that didn't work out.

eta: Jerry Kill went from NIU to Minnesota and that's worked out nicely, so perhaps it's just a matter of the right coach/right fit.

WKU and Memphis hit the lottery on quarterbacks. They are hardly all around incredibly built programs. All of the major conference teams you've mentioned have had good years since 2000 when they had a good QB.

The biggest reason is coaching hires. The smaller schools sometimes have to go outside the box or pick untested coaches.

Next is strength of schedule, the lower conferences have much easier schedules so these teams can go on big runs.

Third is the cycle of Mid Major teams, a coach can recruit and build on a 4-5 year cycle a little bit easier at the smaller schools. They are good for a year or two and then have to rebuild for 2-3. The major conference schools are expected to reload.

The opponents are the only answer.

1. WKU plays in a division with:
FAU
FIU
Old Dominion
Charlotte
Middle Tennessee
Marshall

2. Illinois plays in a division with:
Wisconsin
Nebraska
Iowa
Northwestern
Minnesota
Purdue

And if you add the fact that Illinois has to play teams from the other division like the Michigans, Ohio State, and Penn State, while WKU gets UTEP, UTSA, Rice, and UNT, and you get the final answer.

In a good year and the other teams in their division aren't in turmoil and transition, the best Illinois can hope for is 4th to 6th in their division. If you're WKU and you don't finish at worst second in your division, you're not even trying.
