This doesn't register with me bc recruits for a major sport clearly find the campus a destination good enough for them to attend. Why is the football team so awful year in year out. I watched them this weekend and their qb cozart may be the worst qb I've ever seen he had countless turnovers and it was amazing to watch. What could Kansas so to better their football team and why is it so hard for the football team vs the basketball team.

Not like Duke has had a ton of success at football, either. UConn had a few years of decent.

Flip side as well. Lots of great football schools that are awful in basketball. Tough to build tradition and facilities in both, especially if you're at a location that doesn't have a lot of nearby talent. Not a lot of 5* football players in Kansas vs Florida, California, Texas, Louisiana

History

Same with Duke

Kansas needs to go the route of Kansas St and be a juco recruiting school.

Some guy called College Sports Nation yesterday and asked the same thing about Kentucky. Lou Holtz said there is no reason UK can't be good and "I truly believe if you have the right mindset, you can make any program top 20 in two years, three years maximum."

You would have to have a home run hire for a coach in a place like KY to make them contend for the east within 2-3 years and you'd have to get lucky by snagging some recruits that were underrated.

Also, it is a lot easier for schools with shite in-state recruiting options to recruit a good basketball team vs a good football team. I mean, Kansas just has to recruit 4 or 5 highly ranked guys nationally for bball and then fill the rest with a few local prospects and youre set.

Hard to do that with football.

It's not like they're just kind of bad in football. They are fricking terrible.

There are few or no 5 star players in the region.

There are very few 4 star players.

Gayle Sayers is gone.

You need a great coach, keep best locals, get two 4 star from out of state a year.

Hoops is easy. One Danny manning. One Wilt. a few good ones.

85 man squad in sport in which strength and team work mean juniors and seniors on the lines and a 3rd year QB.

It's a shame the same caller didn't ask him how he was unable to sustain that at South Carolina after his two Outback bowls.

How many of the perennial College basketball powers are consistently good at football?

10 winningest college basketball teams:

Kentucky
Kansas
North Carolina
Duke
Syracuse
Temple
UCLA
St. John's
Notre Dame
Indiana

Other than UCLA in talent-rich California and Notre Dame who can recruit everywhere, not much football success there.

Kentucky fans have been asking this question for years. We at least try in football, I don't think Kansas really does.

Didn't just 2 years ago they only had like 50 something scholarship football players on the roster? Like everything he touches, Charlie Weiss left them a bigger dumpster fire than he found them.

Coaching

They got rid of their best coach in school history because he was "too mean"

Kansas State was always awful as well before Snyder and started to get back to awful during his first retirement.it will be interesting to see what happens to them when he hangs it up for good

Must just be a tough area to get players

Roy Williams is the simple answer. He is the reason Mason left and spending on the football program is not as much.

It's a multilayered issue for UK (and some of that definitely applies to Kansas).

- Football talent in-state is next to nil. Stoops has worked on trying to remedy some of that by getting into Ohio, but you're only going to pull so much there. Louisville has done it by picking up South Florida and Georgia guys.

- UK is just now starting to invest in facilities. They still haven't truly invested in quality coaching. The fact that we're even having to discuss whether Stoops will be back says all it needs to say about the administration's handling of football.

- Most boosters are interested in one thing and one thing only. And it's not football.

KU has an advantage that UK does not though, the Jayhawk conference. But they don't seem to use it very well. There is 7 JUCO's within 120 miles and then Garden and NEO.
