How about play the bowl games at beginning of season?

Yes, you heard it here first. Play the games on Labor Day weekend. Then you solve all the issues with the current system (fan apathy, players avoiding injury, etc).
Bowls would get to pick whoever they want to participate.

It's going to take an out of the box solution.

Then you get players worrying about injuries before the season.
Also, you don't know what teams are good and which will suck. Michigan State and oregon would have been in the rose bowl

So no more post season other than the playoffs?
As it is there are quite a few big time non-conference matchups in the first two weeks of the season.

I think we are beginning to see the end of the superfluous bowls. ESPN operated under a model that if you put college football on then people will watch. They didn't care about what teams or matchups, they believed people would watch. ESPN is finding out that's not necessarily true. I like the bowls at the end but we can do without about 1/3 of them.

how about forcing more top teams to play each other. in a modified playoff from week 1. Preseason top 16 weeks 1-2 pre schedule in a bracket format.
Week 1: preseason 1 v pre 16, 2 v 15 etc. in preseason.
Week 2: preseason 1 v pre 8, 2 v 7 etc. 16 v 9, 15 v 10.
Will give a more accurate picture early.

lets get rid of rent-a-wins first.

You must be a truly devoted fan if you really watch 2/3rds of the however many bowl games that are now played.
And the neutral site games that major teams have been playing to start the year at locales like Atlanta, Dallas, or even Wisconsin are essentially a version of a bowl game payout for the involved teams. So it mostly seems to me that what Chicken is proposing already functionally exists.

I think a conference challenge week (like CBB does) once a year would probably be fun for fans. Don't know how coaches would handle it though.

Remove roster restrictions from bowl games. Red shirts, transfers, etc. let them play.

Have the winter practices for all teams and hold the Playoff games as normally scheduled. Then move the remainder of the bowl games to the weekend before the draft.
Obviously draft eligible players won't participate but the teams would have all of spring practice to get the backups ready and we can end the stupidity of spring games.

These are essentially bowl games. I think you'll see a trend that grows with name brand match ups earlier in the year.

I like this idea.

Totally agree there is a problem with so many bowls...
How about cutting it back to 15 bowls so the matchups are good and the games matter even if you're not in the playoffs.
Interest among players and fans would return.

Why wouldn't they still skip the end of the season?

Interesting, the kick off classics are already a thing and getting bigger every year. Make that the 40 + bowls and then have an 8-12 team playoff at the end of the season. Since pretty much every team gets invited to a bowl now, qualifying for a bowl is irrelevant and they could just start off with a bowl.

The 41 bowls or bowl system, feels like every bubble before the burst.
Whether tech boom, sub primes, everyone's gotta buy a home..
Feels like that...Every Corp. has to have a bowl game as some status symbol.
75% of the bowl games - take away the word Bowl in the game - and it's just another game contested by two average, minor teams, played in places you don't wanna be.

With all due respect, that is a solution searching for a problem.

Exactly what I was going to say. Would make a lot of these games less special, if there were tons more...more than likely.
