Before you say soccer board, im talking as a sports fan. Messi who is just 29, one of the 2 best players in the world and at the peak of his career, just retired from the Argentinian team last night right after the loss.

LINK

quote:

I tried my hardest. It's been four finals, and I was not able to win. I tried everything possible. It hurts me more than anyone, but it is evident that this is not for me. I want more than anyone to win a title with the national team, but unfortunately, it did not happen.

quote:

I've thought about it. Like I said earlier, I tried everything possible to win. And that's it. It's four finals lost.

If Lebron had somehow just lost to the warriors again and said this same stuff about trying his hardest and it not working out and him quitting, right after the loss, saying he wouldn't come back to the cavs the internet might have crashed.

I know most of you aren't soccer fans but wow I've never seen a star in any sport, maybe joey votto earlier this year talking about retiring, but he's nowhere near the level guy Messi is. Crazy to hear him talk like such a quitter.

Weight of a nation vs. Weight of Cleveland...a little bit different.

I can't think of anyone on Messi's level. Such a downer to hear that. They were saying the atmosphere after the loss was worse than the World Cup Final loss. Crazy.

because the threw a mouthpiece?

That's a wee bit different than quitting the team directly after losing.

What observers also don't see is a massive discord between players and the national federation and the fact that Messi won't be the only one to make this announcement. Several of Argentina's top players could be right behind him.

Yes, frustration is playing a part again, but this has been brewing for a long time in Argentina.

Retiring from the national team isn't that big of a deal

He will be 31 by the time the next World Cup comes around. I think he should stay on the international team, but whatever.

It's a shame because this was Argentina's golden age and no international hardware to show for it.

I don't really follow soccer so someone answer me this.

I realize that players have their "regular" teams that they play on, be it MLS, barclays, etc. But when it comes to tournaments like copa/uefa/world cup, you play for your home country. Am I right so far? So..assuming messi is "quitting argentina", is he basically just not going to play in these anymore and only play for whatever his "regular" team is? So for the world cup in 2 years he's just going to sit it out?

Correct. He plays for a Spanish club named Barcelona.

It's the same as Lebron not playing for USA in the olympics, yet playing for the Cavs next year.

Correct. He is essentially saying I will no longer be available to play for the Argentina national team. He will continue to play for FC Barcelona, where he has played his entire professional career.

I've spent a lot of time in Argentina and all my Argentine friends are completely losing their shite on Facebook. It's hard to overstate the pressure on Messi. Really nothing like it in the US.

really? Im not a fan of lebron the person, but the man just had the whole country rooting for him to fail and he lost in the finals last year and came back again this year and was down 3-1 and won it all. Messi just took his ball and went home, he's a vag to me now.

Yep it's magnified by Argentina having a player as polarizing as Maradona.

The pressure and magnification of it would be as if basketball was the biggest sport in the world and MJ won the USA the world cup of basketball. Then, Lebron couldn't get it done.

It is disappointing, but it's not an apples to apples comparison to LeBron retiring after losing a finals.

Considering how many games are played during a league season these days, it's hard for the superstars to ever get a break when fully committed to their national team. If Messi thinks this will help his career last a little longer, more power to him.
