Have we ever seen a season with insane expectations actually met like Russ this year?

as soon as Durant picked GS in free agency the internet basically joined in a collective gasp as we tried to imagine just what Russ would do this year. he's been a very good/elite player for a while but the expectations raised a pretty great deal when we all realized (1) he'd be most of what OKC had on offense this year and (2) for an emotional player, his level of anger/intensity was going to be raised significantly
the expectations were legitimately insane. possibly higher than expectations for any individual player in any sport. and not only did he meet those insane expectations, but he exceeded them. this isn't a "haha i'm right" thread and if somebody gives a better example i'll gladly agree, but i just can't think of a season where so much was expected out of a player and at the minimum, he delivered fully
and this thread has nothing to do with james harden. he took his game to a new level this year and was absurdly amazing himself. the difference is only a few people (myself included) really thought he was going to be able to do that and nobody put the expectations on him to deliver this kind of amazing year. there is no argument that he clearly exceeded the (vastly) lower expectations on him coming into this year. end of discussion on harden

Good luck with that.

I guess you could say Lebron delivering in Cleveland.
I know he had a good supporting cast so it isn't just individual, but its fricking Cleveland, and the Warriors looked unbeatable last year.
And his performance was absurd in the Finals and they were down 3-1.

You could argue LeBron in basically every regular season since her entered the league, but Russ is as good as it gets. People genuinely thought he could average a triple double, which is insane, and he did in dominant form.
I saw an article the other day from 2014 that listed the triple double average and single season record as a top 5 unbreakable NBA record.

Does the fact that there are FAR more triple doubles this year across the league than anytime in history lower the impressiveness of Russ' feat?
It's still ridiculous, but there are tons of players with career highs in triple doubles this year.

I don't know if we have, but I also don't want to glance over the fact that if he wins the MVP he will have the worst shooting percentage by far than anyone since AI in 2000.
If in the off season he really sets to work on shot selection, he could really be a 25/15/10 guy. He just takes about 7 unadvised shots a game where you just go WTF

Different sport but going into 1998 there was a lot of buzz about McGwire (coming off a 58 HR season) breaking Maris's record. I don't think anyone would have predicted him shattering it and hitting 70 like he did though

Mostly because, like Iverson with the 76ers, it's Westbrook or bust for OKC.

Yeah McGuire is a good one.

The Brady/Moss combo comes to mind but yeah, everyone was meme'ing GOATbrook from the second Durant left OKC and he has done nothing but play like pissed off russ since then.

Lebron had more hype than anyone ever. And he destroyed expectations.

Yeah he was as hyped as anybody I can remember but I don't think anybody really thought he would be a top 2 player of all time with a chance to take to GOAT status from MJ.

Seems like there was a goatbrook FU world tour type of thread when KD signed but I can't find it
Eta: found it

I wouldn't say he had insane expectations. People would have completely understood if the Thunder weren't that great.
If they were pretty good, that was just a bonus.
So I disagree with your premise.

Tom Brady ripping the league a new one after getting off suspension.

pretty sure literally within an hour of Durant announcing he was going to GS there was a discussion on here if he could average a triple double. that's insane

I like Russ, but Russ isn't even getting out of the 1st round without KD.
Remember?? The Regular season means jack shite. And, it should as a whole.
Charles Barkley's take on the league as of right now is all you need to know.
If Lebron truly wanted a triple double every game I promise you he could easily have one. There isn't a doubt in my mind.

Ummm. Harden is at 44% while Russ is at 42.5%. Some of you are acting like the guy is shooting 30%. Hell even on three pointers, they are nearly identical and the fact is Harden's shot selection is easier since he has teammates that can space the floor while Russ doesn't.
It is beyond absurd what Houston fans will grasp onto to try and prop up Harden over Westbrook.
