Have the goalposts been moved when it comes to the NBA MVP race?

Two seasons ago, Curry and Harden were the MVP front-runners. Warriors were ranked 1 and Rockets were ranked 2.
The general argument from the media was that Curry's team was better so he deserved the MVP even though Harden was seemingly carrying the Rockets single-handedly to the 2 seed.
Flip to today, and Harden and Westbrook are the MVP front-runners. Rockets are ranked 3 (and right up there with the Warriors and Spurs), and the Thunder are 5th.
The general media argument now seems to be that it doesn't matter that the Thunder are ranked 5th... Westbrook is single-handedly carrying the Thunder.
Is this the media picking the player they like first and using whatever argument they can to justify the player they like even if they are hypocritical in their reasoning?

Media members will always move the goalpost to fit their argument whether it's sports or politics.

Yes. And it's bullshite. I do think that Harden will eventually pull ahead if things stay the same though.

Who is having the better year? If Westbrook has the chance to win (and deserves it), then that is a good thing. Individual awards should be predicated on individual value, not on the rest of the team and organization.
I just want the player who provides the most value of the regular season to win MVP.

I think part of it is what Westbrook is doing since Durant left. He lost his other super star and is now exclusively carrying that team, making him look that much brighter.

Westbrook needs to win the MVP or be the consensus favorite for this to be a thing. He's not, so quit playing the victim preemptively.

Westbrook is the favorite in every Vegas book.

They are moved every season without reason in both the NBA and NFL.

Swag you gotta realize these are the same voters who didn't put harden on any of the all NBA teams last year when he had a season that had only been matched by 3 other players in league history. Who knows what they gonna do. History says that record matters a lot.

How often is that metric correct?

Prime isn't the main perpetrator when it comes to making excuses. He's just starting a discussion.
Harden should be the MVP right now. He's more efficient than Westbrook

Beats me. It's based on past results.
We know who ryno would vote for :
"I want him to go like 75 (points), 20 rebounds and 20 assists," Rockets forward Ryan Anderson said. "That's what I expect from him. He is the best player in the NBA right now, in my opinion. He should be MVP. If anybody is not considering that, it's crazy.

Reckon we'll see more of these LINKtypes of articles as the season progresses.

By an overwhelming amount? I wouldn't put much stock into that. The public perception of Westbrook's greatness is much higher than the people who will be voting.

I think you are underrating how hated Harden is by the voters.

I don't know where you're looking exactly but Harden is 1 in most MVP power rankings and was 1 just last week before Russ took the slight lead on the official NBA website

Westbrook is being put under that same microscope for the first time. Give the media time for that perception to even out.

As bad as Barkley's rep was coming into 93 he deservedly won over MJ. Win and post amazing numbers and the voters will change their tune
