Do you think, let's say 30 years from now, we will be able to look back and say that conference expansion has had a positive effect on college sports as a whole?

I don't believe so. Forgetting about the loss of rivalries for a moment, I don't think conferences should have more than 10 teams. Everyone should play everyone in the conference in the regular season.

Teams not playing other for 4 or more seasons in a row is pretty dumb.

No. It killed WAC football.

i guess it depends how you look at it. there is a lot more money now in college sports but i agree that having conferences with 14 teams is just stupid

I feel it has been overwhelming positive for every sport aside from football.

speaking on the sec i dont think it benefited the existing teams. it was obviously a good move for a&m and missouri though.

too early to tell imo

Yeah, I would say it has benefitted certain schools more than sports as a whole.

In addition to A&M and Missouri, Colorado is much happier in the Pac-12 than the Big 12.

ETA - and Utah going from the MWC to the Pac was obviously a benefit for them.

The Only school, who got what they really wanted was Colorado

They are liberal Hipsters who wanted to be in the Pac12, with the other liberal hipster/yuppie schools. They have always felt they were better than everyone in Big12.

They felt like they were stuck with hayseeds. They have been wanting to move for close to 2+ decades, they just had no one who wanted to listen to them.

i have a hard time believing that this newest round of expansion has not helped the SEC as a whole. allowing the SECN to get into texas is letting the rest of the conference make so much more money

Utah and TCU benefitted big time IMO. Stepping up into major conferences, especially Utah. That was a dream scenario for them I feel like

the two conferences who have not benefited from conference expansion have been the big 12 and the big east. hell the big east is no more when in terms of football

i have a hard time believing that the sec wouldnt be in the same place it is now if we didnt add two teams. my guess is they would be in the exact same place either way.

so allowing texas a&m into the sec has given the sec and other teams so much more money?

uh yes, i dont see how this is even debatable. sure, the SEC would be making a good amount of money on the SECN without a&m or missouri, but getting into the texas market pushes it into a whole new level

It opened up the window to renegotiate the TV terms much earlier.

I can see the flip side though, because the fans don't see any of that money. It's not like ticket prices are cheaper. If I were an Auburn fan or something I could see not liking it

Schools like Idaho got fricked though. They had to go back to the Sun Belt for football which is crazy travel, and dropped down to the Big Sky in basketball. It's Idaho, so no one cares, but still sucks for them.
