Because it's really none of their business. They know the charges and the resolution of the case. They don't need transcripts, doctor's reports and photographs.

10 games for a guy whose charges got dropped? NFL going all judge, jury, and executioner on us

Doesn't change what he did. Ray Rice's girl didn't press charges, but it doesn't change the fact that he KO'ed her

10 games for dropped charges The NFLPA should be suing in two half seconds if they were anything resembling competent

The NFL isn't in the business of arresting or pursuing charges, and it seems like they don't care about that in these situations

Anyone saying he should get off just because someone isn't pressing charges against them doesn't know anything about the situation

Honestly interested to see if AP gets the same treatment. I think he was already reinstated, though.

He may be a POS, but that's a dangerous precedent to set and the NFLPA shouldn't stand for it

You don't press charges in a criminal matter.

Whichever Carolina has a weird legal system. He was found guilty by a lower judge. If you appeal, you get another bite at the apple with a jury trial (and a bench trial, I' assuming) and the verdict is vacated.

At the appeal stage, the victim was uncooperative and the charges were dropped.

At least that's how I think it played out. I could be wrong.

Sounds right. There is no contesting that he beat her. They just didn't prosecute because she didn't show.

So is that what happened to Ray rice and all other couples who decide not to pursue charges? You can't just say I don't want to press charges?

If he was suspended for the charge and the outcome of the trial didn't matter, why was he paid a years salary and put on the commish list all year? If the outcome didn't matter he should've been automatically suspended

I don't get the holding pattern they put him in for, in their words was in honor of due process, if the outcome of the trial was not significant

It's not as simple as saying "I don't want to press charges."

Pretty sure the state can still pursue charges even without charges from the abused spouse

They are less likely to because it's harder to convict.

That's what I'm asking, how does that come about in these situations?

I don't know. It's a weird system the NFL has. Either let them play or suspend them. Having them waste an entire year and then imposing a penalty is silly.
