Great Bloomberg article up about how ESPN is slowly dying.

As subscribers leave the network, and often cable altogether, ESPN is stuck with rising costs for the rights to broadcast games. Programming costs will top $8 billion in 2017, according to media researcher Kagan. Most of that money goes to rights fees through deals that extend into the next decade. Last year profits from Disney’s cable networks, of which ESPN is the largest, fell for the first time in 14 years. The dip was small, about half a percent, but nonetheless alarming.

I made a thread about this almost a year ago.
LOL at teams paying Tyler Johnson $50M and Mike Conley $135M. Sure it works now, but lets see if those numbers work once this current deal is up.

It will be VERY interesting to see what kind of labor strife results when leagues start telling players they have to make less because their TV contracts are shrinking. One thing about workers (regardless of industry) is that they don't respond well to downturns in pay, even if the overall business is not doing as well.
Given the egos on many of the players, being told that they have to make $5mm and not $10mm per year is not going down smoothly.

ESPN has gone down the drain as it went away from professionalism to swag based bs. Bad English, crappy music all the time, sholls like Greenie, thrash like MMA, and too much dancing and dunk obsession. They obsession with the 12 year old audience has turned off adults.

ESPN has been going downhill since they decided their most important demographic is black kids ages 14 to 16.

To me, it will be more interesting to see how this affects college sports. I've always thought that conference commissioners will regret nationwide superconferences if the TV money ever dries up. I don't know when that happens, but I know some people have surmised it will be when ala carte programming comes into play and people aren't forced to buy ESPN or things like BTN.

While all this is true, it's still not the reason for their decline.

Yes, ESPN is losing money due to the loss of cable subscribers. Also keep in mind when people are not tuning into the channel due to the other factors mentioned that will negatively effect ad revenue.

often cable altogether
That's not really an ESPN problem. A 13% drop since 2008 could be blamed on cord cutters. They just need to adjust how their product is delivered.

they have to
the ESPN contract may sink ESPN, but the money is paid and that revenue has to be split among the players

I happened to wake up early this morning and I put on sportscenter.
It was crap.
It was crap.

The SJW culture has ruined all the espn programming.
PTI is the only show I watch on the network now outside of live college sports, realize they are bleeding hearts as well, but they tend to keep their politics out of the show for the most part.

Sports center has gotten so incredibly shitty the last couple years. I hung on for a while when people first started criticizing it but it's pretty much unbearable these days.

I wasn't big into sports growing up but I'd tune in to Plays of the Week for the fun of it.
I'm more into sports now (but not much), but I have no desire to tune in to ESPN for anything. Every time I see it, it's some talking head formulating reasons why Brady is hated by everyone, LeBron is hated by everyone, etc.

Haven't watched anything on that shite channel other than a live sporting event since they started "making the case" for Bama not even a week after they lost to LSU in 2011

clay travis has been calling this for a while now.

It's not solely because of politics but it is part of the problem
Maybe 1/20th of the problem. Whatever percentage it is is heavily overstated on this board.

But the majority of sports fans are conservative.
Not as much of a majority as you think. It's probably not a majority at all but a plurality and not a big one at that.

quote:I don't see it affecting the SEC, or B1G. CFB is ingrained in those areas. Fans in the Midwest will carry the B1GN through subs, while the SEC will do just fine in our traditional states and some of Texas. The ACC will be fine as well with all the subscribers they will get from basketball fans in N.Y., Pittsburgh, Virginia, etc. Interesting enough though will be to see how the content on each network shifts. ESPN is going to do everything they can to force you to take their entire package, but they may forced to let you decide and manipulate even more what content is kept on the traditional platforms vs. the new conference networks.

This isn't true whatsoever. Study: Sports Fans Skew Republican
In fact, the fan bases of 23 teams show a propensity to vote more Republican than they claim, versus only six teams' fans who vote more Democratic:
Sports Viewers Skew Republican -- but NBA Fans Lean Blue
