Golfers: Why can't I have a round where EVERYTHING comes together?

Specifically, if I am having a round where my driver is on point, my irons suffer, and vice versa. Is this a mental thing? Is it a physical thing? It can't be coincidence.

Today, I smoked my driver for the majority of the round, but couldn't hit an accurate iron to save my arse. Just two weeks ago, I struggled to hit fairways, but managed to hit a ton of greens. Of course, I've also had days where I've sucked in both fields. However, I can't recall ever having a day where both were clicking at the same time.

If it matters, my current handicap is 13.

It's a different swing and you're not good enough to do both well, consistently.

I A-1 in real golf better than I do in golden tee. It's just not on purpose.

I'd be willing to bet your short game is where you still lose most of your strokes.

On most days, sure. Today my short game is what saved my arse, because of my irons being sprayed everywhere.

Are you playing every single day? If not, then that might be your answer.

If you are then your answer is you're just not able to do so and nobody here can you give you an accurate answer. Just remember that even scratch golfers struggle more times than not to put everything together in a round.

Back when I played every day consistency was the most frustrating thing to deal with out there. I could shoot a beautiful front 9, feel like I had confidence with every club in my bag, and then have it fall apart on the 11th tee box. It's just a difficult sport.

I only play 3-4 times a month on average. I've got young kids, so I rarely play on weekends. It's mostly business golf when I'm able to get out there. I do try to hit the range at least once a week.

Yep if you aren't playing 3-4 times per week you'll never find the consistency you are searching for right now. I hope some others come around though to confirm this because I know its true for me and my group that I play with all the time

Good luck and keep playing

Golf is just really tough. I'm a relatively low single digit handicapper and I deal with the same stuff. There have been a couple rounds where I've put it all together, but that rarely happens. It's just a crazy game because you can shoot the same score with such a variety in fairways and greens hit.

it's the hardest game invented by man. in less than 2 years I've fluctuated from single digits all the way to 12.5. I hate golf

I'm a 5...play maybe 4-6 times a month and almost never swing my clubs between November and March.

But very rarely do I even have all three aspects of my game working well.

I'm the opposite. If my short game wasn't good, I'd never finish a round

But when that leaves me, I have rounds like last week when I went 43/53

I can't remember a round where I haven't left 3-8 shots out there, whether I shoot 73 or 85, it's always should've could've would've

I float from a 16-20ish. I'm not what I would call very good, but i can compete at times. I've only been playing seriously for a couple years (defined by, playing a 3-4 times a month for me). Anyways.... played the bluffs the other day and shot a 98, driver and short game was shite. I stayed at the JW Hill Country the other day and played The Oaks (Valero Open) course there and shot a 102. I think the slope was a 146 there. Literally, the hardest course i have ever been on. Point is.... yup its fricking crazy. B/c i shot a 102 on a tour course and a 98 at the bluffs...

It's because you most likely don't have a consistent repeating swing. Too much going on. Simplify everything and just worry about getting the ball in the hole.

Also, its golf, you're going to struggle. It's not a game that can be perfected

I think that's normal for all casual golfers, except my FIL.
We are both 14s and I beat him 7 out of 10 times. But he has had everything click and shot 74-76 a few rounds. I can't crack 80.
