I've played a few times with shite clubs a buddy had, but i would like to get more time on the course, so should i:

get fitted for clubs?
buy used set to hack and get used 2?
Buy decent new set online?

Get better with a used, forgiving set. Once you can break a "goal score" consistently, get fitted and buy something decent.

How long have you played?
What is your handicap?
How much work does you swing need?

If you need a lot of work on your swing, don't get fitted, your needs will change over time.

I personally don't like used clubs, so my recommendation would be to buy new but get a set that was released a year or 2 ago. You will save a few hundred.

You need some time to develop your swing and consistency. May be hard to fit if you have not played a lot. The first response is your best answer.

What would be a good starter set(used or new) to just hack and slash with?

Also, are Golf shoes a must, or is wearing other shoes that won't tear up the greens ok?

The shoes are recommended IMO. I forgot my shoes one round and didn't make it past the 1st tee box without going to the clubhouse and spending 1.5x what those FJ's were worth.

Just buy all Titleist and be a poser, atleast your clubs still look good when you hit it bad

You can buy a used set and get them fitted. At the least get them shortened or lengthened. I can't tell you how many people I've seen use clubs that were way too short or long for them.

Also make sure you get the same flex shaft in everything.

I figured buying all Cobra would have me looking good off and on the course, but still looking like Spalding(caddyshack) on it.

Ping G25 irons. R15 driver/woods. Cleveland wedges. Putter is all about what you like, feel... no way anyone can make a real suggestion there.

go to dick sporting goods/golfsmith/golf galaxy near you and hit a few on the simulator. find one you like.

taylormade m2 are a good option. very forgiving. king cobra good starter set as well. need to get comfortable striking the ball before dropping $1k on ap2's

My only knock on Ping is that you're better off getting fitted and buying them new. I use to fit/bend clubs and I would NEVER touch Ping. They are tough to bend and if you can bend them you risk a chance of breaking them.

I'm not suggesting he get them bent or fitted to him. It's a burner set to start out and get better with. Once he gets to the point where he's better and isn't having to make crazy swing changes, then he should get fitted for Callaway or Taylormade IMO.

Make sure your golf shoes are waterproof. One of my partners bought a pair that aren't. We play early morning when there is dew and wetness from sprinklers. His socks are soaked by the 3rd hole.

I got a second hand set of Mizuno T-zoid irons about 10 years ago. The sweet spot and feel is pretty damn good considering the age of the clubs. If you could find a slightly newer and gently used set, that would be my recommendation. Still using them to this day. I have tried other iron sets but it feels like I'm cheating on the mizunos.
