Giants trade for CIN starter Mike Leake

I'm not too familiar with Leake, looks pretty solid from his stats. My question is who will he replace in the rotation. Current rotations is:
Madison Bumgarner
Matt Cain
Tim Hudson
Chris Heston
Jake Peavy
Cain or peavy would be my guess but both have been injured much of the season. Cain makes way too much money to get sent to bullpen. Lincecum and Vogelsong have already been sent that way.
Did the Giants really need this guy? Is it an upgrade?
