The NFL’s highest rated TV window got off to its worst start in more than a decade, though breaking weather coverage may have played a role. The Week 1 NFL national window, featuring Seahawks-Packers in 89% of markets, had a 12.7 rating and 22.8 million viewers on FOX Sunday afternoon — down 18% in ratings and 17% in viewership from last year (15.5, 27.5M) and down 6% and 2% respectively from 2015 on CBS (13.5, 23.3M). Last year’s window featured Giants-Cowboys and the 2015 telecast featured Ravens-Broncos. The 12.7 rating is the lowest for the Week 1 NFL national window in 14 years, since FOX posted a 12.5 for coverage featuring Falcons-Cowboys in 2003. The previous low over that span was a 13.0 for coverage featuring Cowboys-Browns in 2008, also on FOX.

Granted, that game was weak sauce. Seattle couldn't score a TD to save their lives. Think it's Dallas-Denver this week so maybe it'll be better?

Why is it every time one of these reports come out about low ratings there is always some bullshite excuse tied to them? Due to breaking weather coverage.... fricking bullshite. I guess every other night in history there was absolutely nothing going on then, right?

They'll be blaming the weather all year. Next season it will be North Korea or some bullshite like that.

So how much better would ratings be if the hurricane didn't hit FL?

They've made the game about politics, commercial breaks, and handcuffed the defense.

It just isn't really a great watch to be honest.

My biggest issue is that when the speed up the game, the commercial breaks aren't the biggest part of it. I'd rather see patches and ads on the jerseys than watch kickoff, commercia, three and out, commercial, injury commercial, 3 and out, and another commercial.

It takes 2 commercials breaks to go from a TD to a new series. Ads control the flow of the game and it's frustrating.

I don't love the politics, etc because it isn't fun but the commercials make sports like Rugby a better experience whether you like the game as much or not.

NFL spin machine going to have to invent a hell of a lot of new excuses fast.

Meanwhile next week the halftime shows are going to be a legion of transgender children burning American flags and spitting on the Bible.

Hilarious isn't it. Somehow current events going on never seemed to harm ratings for the past few decades. It's only now that ratings are falling these excuses are being trotted out.

There isn't 1 silver bullet reason the NFL ratings have so suddenly dropped, it's a myriad of factors, but people being disgusted with the NFL's politics is a huge factor, it might even be the main factor.

I personally refuse to watch any NFL anymore. I've always been a college guy but I did watch a good bit of NFL before the last 2-3 years. I went from a casual watcher to a complete non-watcher, it was easy for me.

The NFL just isn't interesting enough to put up with all the off field bullshite.

I've watched the NFL my whole life. I'm a huge Saints fan, so I'm not one of those SEC/CFB-is-better guys. I've loved the NFL and used to be excited about the upcoming season.

Yeah, the Saints are horrible. But, it isn't about that. The Saints have been horrible before. It didn't affect the way I saw the League.

The NFL is basically unwatchable now. Throwing a flag after every tackle is a big reason why. The fact that only the last 6 minutes of a game actually seems to matter is another reason. I don't care about the politics, but it is getting ridiculous. I don't want to see all the teams wear pink for a quarter of the season every year. I don't want female announcers in the booth. I want professional football.

I'm not sure what this is. It's the product on the field and in the production booth that has deteriorated enormously.

I hate how transient the league has become. Add to that the CBA legislating practice and hitting out of the game, the product on the field has regressed noticeably. As someone said, it's not good enough anymore to deal with its off the field issues
