Ken Norton Sr., a former heavyweight boxing champion who defeated Muhammad Ali in 1973, then lost in the rematch later that year, died Wednesday at a hospital in Arizona where he had been undergoing rehabilitation since suffering a stroke last year, according to his friend and manager Patrick Tenore. RIP Ken. I saw a lot of his fights, because a lot of them were on network TV. The few that were on PPV were cheap enough you could afford to watch.

His kid was a pretty good linebacker and is coaching with the Seahawks.

He did more than anyone to make Ali a legend.
I watched as he fought Tex Cobb. He wore Tex's jaws out for about five rounds and could do nothing more than make him blink. After five rounds of pummeling Cobb, he was completely exhausted, he won a split decision

I've slept a couple of nights since I've seen or heard Gerry Cooney's name.

His style gave Ali fits. Ali was in magnificent shape for their second fight -- possibly the best shape he ever got in post-ban, with the possible exception of the Foreman fight -- and he still needed to rally in the 12th just to secure a split decision.

Ali Norton 2 - full fight

Still remember the Norton / Holmes fight back when fights still went 15 rounds. Both fighters were carried out on stretchers after the fight. I think Holmes won by Split Decision.

I was still living in Baton Rouge that year. That was the most awesome fight I ever saw. They were toe to toe the entire 15 rounds.

Have to bump this to get on the first page. Norton was a beast. I am surprised that nobody has mentioned that he is the ONLY one to have ever broken Alis jaw. Was fun to watch him fight because he was a brawler with decent boxing skills. If this dude had Floyd "Moneyman" defense he would have gone undefeated. JMO. RIP to Mr. Ken Norton. Thanks for the memories.
