Former BYU football coach LaVell Edwards, a Utah sports icon who revolutionized college football for nearly three decades with his wide-open offensive approach and dominant passing attack, died Thursday. He was 86.

Edwards, a soft-spoken, gentle man with a wry sense of humor and self-deprecating style that won him legions of admirers throughout the world, turned BYU's football program into a winner after years of mediocrity. He was so successful the school named its football stadium after him following his retirement in 2000.

Edwards compiled a 257-101-3 record in 29 seasons at BYU, a tenure that ranks him fifth all-time for coaches at one school. The Cougars won or shared 20 conference titles in his 29 seasons, went to 22 bowl games — winning seven — and were crowned the 1984 national champions. His 257 victories ranks him seventh among coaches in NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision history.

Damn. He was just mentioned in the Snyder thread.

Hell of a coach, and a gentleman.

He was really a great guy according to everyone who knew him. His BYU team was the last non-power 5 team to win a national title.

Legendary coach and an all-around good person.

Just a poor choice in BYU. Played football at Utah State, went to grad school at Utah, became a legend at the worst university/AD in the nation.

Imagine what Utah would look like today if they had Edwards.

Mike Leach and Hal Humme visited Edwards and took a lot of his concepts and simply moved guys around a little. He definitely should be one of the guys credited with the Air Raid's birth

Essentially Hal Mumme used his position as OC for UTEP to watch BYU film because they were in the same conference.

He wanted to mirror Edwards' 3/4 WR formations and offensive concepts. So Edwards should absolutely be credited for inspiring what is known now as the Air Raid...

Jon Oliver had a skit about it right after the election. I'm sure that had something to do with it.
