I propose that in the NFL, that overtime should last until a team has both the lead in the game and possession of the football. It seems like a pretty simple and fair method to conclude the game, in my opinion, compared to the current system. Any thoughts?

I brought it up before, and I know people disagree and apples and oranges and all that--but the NFL overtime rule is like saying a baseball game in extra innings ends if the visitors hit a home run in the top of the inning, or an overtime basketball game ends if the first team with possession hits a 3-pointer.

Never really thought of that but I guess I don't hate it.

Ok. What if a team 2 scores on a safety on the first possession of team 1. Is the game over after team 1 attempts an onside?

I actually like the proposal. It keeps the integrity of the entire game, while doing away with TD/FG discrepancies.

I'll add to your proposal, eliminate ties and put 15 min on the clock and time it as if you're starting the game over. (i.e. 2 min warning in the second overtime and the team that kicked off to start gets to receive the kick starting the 3rd. give teams 3 timeouts per 2 overtimes, etc.)

A safety would end the game under this system.

Good question, unless you throw in a wrinkle that a safety is considered "possession."

the only thing i might change is make it instead of the lead with the ball, make it the lead after both teams have had the same number of possessions. therefore if team a goes on defense first gets a stop and then scores, they don't have to go on defense again. otherwise it's like giving the visiting team an extra at bat if the home team takes the lead in the 11th inning.

That's a totally new proposal, and would add way too much time to the game.

By definition, the rule as is does give an unfair advantages of good, high-scoring offensive teams and hurts conservative teams built on defense. Outside of fluke plays and defensive touchdowns, of course.

Take a team like the Saints, for example, that has a high scoring offense and a pathetic defense. If they win the toss, they win. If they lose the toss, they lose. It's usually as simple as that.

It's the same thing we have now, just gets rid of the ties. I don't mean play a full 15 min period if it's not necessary, I'm just saying use that as a basis of when to change directions and to kickoff again.

I like the proposal.

My spitball proposal is this:

1. Untimed overtime
2. Equal, alternating possessions
3. Each possession begins with a kickoff (with one exception noted in #6)
4. If it's still tied after each team gets 2 possessions, the game ends in a tie
5. Defensive points ends the game immediately (includes safety)
6. In the result of a turnover, you have the choice to kick a field goal from the spot to win, or you can just choose to change possessions with a kickoff

The idea is that it will cause teams to be more aggressive on offense and defense, and it incorporates all elements (offense, defense, special teams). Defenses would play for turnovers. Offenses would be forced to go for it on 4th down because they have nothing to lose.

that's all we need is regular season games to go on for 6 hours.

no, no its no where close to that

Personally i had no problem with sudden death. Play defense of STFU. I'd like to see numbers on how often a teams won on the first possession. But you guys are way out thinking yourselves with these convulented schemes Just play an extra quarter or 10 minutes who ever has the most points at the end of that wins, no more than 1 OT in the regular season 2 if you do 10 minute OT. Play until a winner in the playoffs.

I don't think my original post had a very convoluted scheme.

If it were any team besides the Patriots that lost, people wouldn't be saying anything. They would probably be bashing the coach not questioning the rule.
It is insane the amount of implied power that team has.

We could always go back to sudden death, a simple but exciting scenario to end a game.

I disagree. Any game with a playoff berth or seeding on the line would have gotten the attention.

And it wasn't even a mistake. Belichick does shite like this on purpose. He had nothing to lose. The Patriots will get the 1 seed, most likely. He had house money. And he does shite like this just to prove he's the smartest guy in the room (which he often is). If it worked, every team would do the same thing next week and Belichick is an "innovator."

if it was more than just play an extra quarter or X number of minutes, then yes it is.

What is OT in baseball? how about basketball? even soccer when they have OT they play 30 more minutes before going to penalty kicks.
