Football Helmet and Facemask

Would getting rid of the face mask in football make the game less exiting and less appealing? I understand that it makes it more dangerous, but players are willing to take more risk and chances due to the added protection of the facemask. Also, imagine the offensive and defensive line play. Surely it would take a hit.

If they are serious about player safety they would reduce pads and force players to rugby style tackle.
